Hmm, where is the black in the middle? I have been palm lathering mine to try and break it in and it's lost a couple of bristles but it's starting to flare out on the side tips more than this. Since mine is brand new, I'm hoping I haven't messed it up already

That black color fades after time. Boar is fragile when dry so make sure you wet the bristles well before using. When wet it splays much more. Other than that you can't mess up a boar brush

The black band in the middle will fade out with time, but it should still be visible.

I use the black band as a measuring tool for how wet I want to make the bristles. Starting at the tips, and label the sections 1, 2, and 3 on down to the ferrule. I stand the brush knot down in a coffee cup, and add just enough water to cover section 1, up to where the black begins. This is all I need, most of the time. For thirstier creams like Musgo Real, I go up to section 2. Keeping section 3 dry will help keep the brushes backbone nice and stiff.

Of course, for rinsing after the shave, all 3 sections get wet. They have to, in order to get all the lather out of the breach of the knot.

I don't fluff mine out on a towel to dry. I just flick the water out, lightly squeeze in a towel and let it dry. Yours look ok to me.

Alright thanks. By the way, I'm about a month into this and I still don't know what the world splay means.

Oh the day I long for a coffee mug. The significant other tells me all of ours are off limits. I'm still holding out for an Ole Spice mug.

Splay refers to the way a knot spreads out when you press it against your face. This is generally more pronounced than the bloom, which is solely due to gravity while it is drying.

I thought that is what it might of been, but doesn't every brush have a splay when you press it against your spin regarding the bristles flaring out?

Depending on the stiffness of the bristles it can splay very little, or a lot. Of course if you mash any brush into your face it will splay, but we are talking using a reasonable amount of pressure.

With my 830 it splays effortlessly, yet still has enough stiffness to load up harder soaps.
