Seasonal Considerations

So pardon me if a thread like this exists, but I am curious....

I live in Arizona. So usually anything cooling is going to be good on my face. But... it does get cold here some times. So I am curious if people here use different products on a seasonal basis for the sake of comfort and cooling and/or warming in the winter if there is such a thing?

Thanks!

Jason

Not always, but generally it's a good idea. If I still lived in AZ (lived in Yuma for 8 years), I'd be rocking the old Proraso / C.O. Bigelow, and some Osage Rub. Honestly, it rarely gets below freezing there (unless you live in Flagstaff or Prescott), but as long as you avoid menthol and minty oils, you should be fine. Some of the spicier, more warming AS and soaps/creams might be good in winter.

This is good information. I probably won't change any routines until I am fully comfortable with a blade, razor, brush (I have literally at the time of this writing shaved twice with a DES razor) so I will have to get used to things. But once I do I am going to want to learn some of the nuance and cool things you can do with the time of year, or for special occasions, or even just for variety's sake.

I've lived in the southwest since a couple of years before beginning to shave, about 58 years ago. Before that, I lived where there was neither a hot summer nor a cold winter (west central California). Here, we have three two month long short seasons, and six months of summer. Prior to the current year, I never had more than perhaps four kinds of creams / soaps at a time, although I used to have at least a half dozen aftershaves at a time. I've never felt any particular need for adjustments to my product choices based on weather.

I use Proraso almost exclusively in summer and I use Cella and Tabac more often in winter.. Arko is all year round for me..

This is all great information. I do kinda like the woody, leathery scents. I didn't find one where I was shopping (or I overlooked it). Recommendations?

Several companies make sandalwood scented creams, soaps, AS/balms, colognes. Not sure on any leather ones over all except Spanish Leather cologne, and the old classic English Leather AS/cologne...

I've been using the Family Dollar Spice (Old Spice clone) throughout the summer but am looking at changing to a sandalwood through the end of the year. I have shaving and bath soaps as well as anti-perspirants that match well with each of those scents.

Going forward I'm hoping to start changing elements to coincide with the seasons, but this year I was rather limited due to having joined the 2012 Sabbatical and prior to that I never gave it much thought. I just used Williams and VDH soaps with whatever drugstore AS I had on hand.

Bay rums will probably be my fall/winter AS choice. Warming(read:burning) and of a more holiday scented variety. Clove, nutmeg, cinnamon

I made the mistake of using a milder menthol AS before going out in 40 degree weather early this morning. I'd hate to think what it would be like freezing or below with Osage Rub. :velva2:
