SCS lathering

Well, after using mainly Trumpers, TOBS and a bit of ADP, I thought I'd give some SCS a go and purchased some Pistachio and some Honeysuckle creams.

Now I know that SCS gets great reviews and is certainly very well regarded, however try as I might I struggle to get anywhere near my usual level of lather resulting in some pretty disappointing shaves.

The lather I do manage is thin and disappears almost as fast as I can apply it to my face. I've tried face and bowl lathering and have also tried using boiled, pure filtered water, same results.

The scents in these two creams are fantastic and I really want to get some good shaves, however all I've had so far is razor burn.

Judging by the reviews I've seen this doesn't look like a common issue, so what is going wrong?

See this review here: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?ltr=S&t=5448, concerning SCS "Very V" shave cream. It seems as if the SCS creams like water, and lots of it. Give this a try and see if it works, and report back to us, please.

Sounds like my experience. SCS is still the only cream I have never managed to get a shaveable lather from. I posted to the forums, I PM'ed with Sue, I did everything I could think of and I still couldn't get a usable lather. I've written it off as a quirk of the universe b/c I know other people really love the stuff. I wanted to, b/c I love some of the scents SCS has, but unfortunately it didn't work out.

There are other fine artisan creams out there. If you like, you can still support SCS via their other products. I like several of their EdTs and the Sahara ASB.

I've been working for a week trying to get a decent bowl of lather from SCS Dagger. Love the scent, and love many of their other products, but I'm starting to feel that it's just not worth the effort, particularly considering how much better I can do with other, easier-lathering creams (C.O. Bigelow/Proraso, KMF, Real Shaving Co.)

I spent some time over the weekend experimenting with SCS cream and managed to get a good amount of lather by adding more water and putting in a bit of extra effort.

However, I have to say that despite generating a large amount of lather I had significantly more drag and irritation than from my usual creams, I just don't seem to get enough lubrication to prevent an uncomfortable shave.

I guess I will have to accept that SCS just isn't right for me, no matter how much I try to love it, it simply doesn't want to love me back!

That is sad. I love the scent and performance of my Very V and Smoke and Beads creams. Last night I did have issues getting Dagger to lather up creamy - wound up with a too bubbly lather - but I still got the same slick lather I got with my other SCS creams. It was just too thin.

Forget the creams. The soaps are da bomb. Seriously. SCS soaps are amazing.

Aftershaves rule, too.
I love their creams but will be trying a soap sample tonight for the first time. Sounds like I'm in for a treat!

And +1 on the aftershaves. I somehow found myself with 5 of theirs in my den!

I use SCS creams and I know that they can be a bit difficult so I will echo the sentiment that if the creams aren't working for you, don't use them. SCS soaps are quite good. So are their aftershaves and frags.

If you want to give the creams another go try this: don't soak your brush just run in under warm water a few times. Place a dime-sized glob of cream in the middle of the brush. Work cream around your face (and into the brush). Then start adding water to the brush, continue the face lather. Takes a bit of water to come to life but I don't find that it takes too much extra time or effort. Good luck.

I feel your pain- I had trouble with the one cream I ordered from SCS, and didn't re-order. I will say it lathered more like a mid-tier shaving soap than a cream (so say, a little too thin for my tastes), but it WAS slick as the dickens. Maybe the one of the slickest lathers I have come across- if there was a way to get more body out of these, I'd be all over them. I tried everything and couldn't make it happen. I will say though, that the water is hard here and other places my shaving products perform better. Try lathering with distilled water perhaps? That may improve things. Best of luck!
