What's new

Scored my first straight this weekend Anton Wingen JR

Went away this weekend an visited some antique stores. Found this straight razor for 12 bucks!!!!
Cant find much info on it online, I don't believe it to be too old even though the box is old. I'm not so sure that box is even a match:blink:

It reads Othello 899 or 669 depends on how you look at it. Anton Wingen JR Solingen Germany

Next steps:
Find out how old this is
Clean it
Take it to get honed and shave ready anyone know what the best way to go about that?

Nice. I like. I hope you get MAAS and clean it upi real nice and hone it up soon. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Guys, I'm going to clean it up now. Not sure about polishing it though I guess I could polish it a little with the ol dremel.
More than anything I want to get it honed so I can start shaving. I wish there was a neighborhood place but it looks like I'm going to have to send it out. :mad3:

I was just looking on a site that offered the following options

  • Standard Edge (our smoothest and most popular edge)
  • Scary Sharp (sharper, but harsher than our standard edge)
  • .125 Micron Finish (even sharper)
  • Shapton 30k
  • Coticule
  • Nakayama Kiita
  • Nakayama Asagi

That is a lot of options. I suppose go for the first one right?

you bought a nice blade for $12....good score  I had a full hollow Anton Wingen ...used a stabilizer on the heel...was a nice blade I ended up giving to the guy that delivers UPS pkgs to us, as he was inquisitive when he found out I shaved using straight razors. I also piff'd him a strop I wasn't using to go along with the blade, and some lapping film so he could keep the edge up

What you could do to get a free honing from a member here...

Create a new post asking for a sample hone edge. There's plenty of peeps here that will hone your razor pro bono...maybe one of them has a new stone and they need a blade to try it out as a finisher. Ask for that. Usually you pay for shipping both ways so the honer incurs no expense

You can ship using a small mailer (padded envelope). going 1st class as it would be under 13 ounces, you could get away for $3 or less each way, though some of these guys have the post office pick up at their place & IIRC, the post office requires Priority postage (about $6)...but you could still mail it for less than three dollars to them...check with them first about return shipping

Another way to ship...I had a guy send me two razors I bought from him. he placed both between two pieces of heavy cardboard, taped it up, no problems, and they came from Belgium

One way I would not suggest for you to ship and that is to not use one of those shirt card (thin cardboard) priority mailers. I bought a razor once and it was shipped to me in one of those, and loose at that. I was surprised it made it to me as there was a worn hole on one end of the mailer. you've seen/used these...their letter and legal letter sized

Chances are good, if you like to shave with straight razors, you'll buy others and one day you'll sharpen your own. Most straight razor shavers here take care of their own edges...it's just easier to learn how to do it than to send to someone else, unless you get a blade that puts you in the weeds=:)
