Schwarzweisskeramik scuttles: Which one? And why?

I have been asked by members of my family for a Christmas list. I don't want too many things but, I want a scuttle made by Schwarzweisskeramik. The question is this: Which one do you recommend and why?

Hopefully those of you lucky enough to own one of these can give me some ideas.

Thank you in advance,

Frank

He's redone the line a little bit and now offers more choices in scuttles from when I bought one, Frank, but mine is closest in size and dimension to the XL scuttle. I got it quite a few years ago, when Mama Bear would occasionally get a shipment in and she'd sell them to whoever was quick enough to order.

First, the cost. Yes , it is expensive, but so what? At the time, there wasn't a big selection in scuttles, and the product he makes is top-notch. Mine had one, tiny glazing pinhole in the coating, but overall, this scuttle is a work of art. I've banged it against the sink and faucets a number of times with no ill effects. I've had hot, and I mean really hot water in this scuttle and have never had any weird sounds coming from this thing indicating any cracking or potential cracking. It is nicely finished and well-balanced. I've called it the "Panzer" of scuttles and it truly is. You could use this thing to defend yourself and family from an intruder if you wanted to.

I'll be honest, when I first got it, I thought it was a bit of overkill, but now, it's everything I need in a fine, hand-crafted scuttle. I think I'll have this thing for years to come. I really like the large mixing bowl, and the comparatively large double wall holds a lot of water, ensuring warm lather. If I were you, I'd get the XL scuttle. But please bear in mind that it's the only one I've ever used.

I've had an S-Scuttle for a few weeks and agree with Don, they are works of art. I've been trying to post pics of it every opportunity I get, so you know I won't pass this one up..

This is the smallest size, and is still quite big. I can't even imagine how big an XL might be. Think about how much counter/storage space you have for this thing. I have a ledge by my bathroom window where this thing rests before breathing fire every morning. Before the SWK, I had a Georgetown Pottery G5 which was also beautiful but did not function well to warm lather. It just did not hold enough water to stay warm, even when boiling the water first. The SWK holds a lot more water - probably twice as much, and keeps my lather hot using only hot tap (about 125 degrees).

Great looking scuttle and thank you for the picture and your comments. As you mentioned, counter space for me is a concern due to the fact that I am using a pedestal sink. So, my shaving den is under the sink and in a cabinet drawer which for me is actually preferred. Perhaps the scuttle itself would be stored there too as is my Old Spice shaving mug. But, when in use the scuttle would sit "topside".

Please keep the commentary coming, I really appreciate your advice and reflections.

shevek brings up some very good points that I missed, Frank. With the change in the line offerings you may want to reconsider which scuttle to get. He offers more choices now, and may have redesigned some of the dimensions of the pieces. Mine stands almost 6 inches high from the base to the top of the handle loop. The span, the distance across from the brush holder/fill port to the back of the handle is 9 1/2 inches. When I look at the picture shevek provided, the small scuttle may be all you need.

Sorry to hijack your thread...

Shevek, how much did it cost you to get your Schwartzweisskeramik scuttle imported into the US?

Thanks,
Dave

Wow! I can see why you like it. That is really beautiful.

I’m stumped
I have a Schwarzweisskeramik - XL. The big handle just fells right to me. Gives a good grip when filling and cleaning.

photo Ansgar sent before he posted the scuttle.

I have played with different temps of water. Boiled the kettle pre shower, this lets it cool down a bit.
50/50 mix of boiled and hot tap water.
Different soap will suffer from getting the scuttle too hot and break down.
I have settled for hot tap water, less fuss and better for most soaps.

Have you guys been using the shaving soap bowl?? I just ordered a grater and plan to grate some soap in it like he recommends.

I use a Hamilton Beach electric teapot, about 1/2 full, and only leave it on for 3 minutes. Perfect for the cremes and soaps I use.

I first had the XL and although I have some big brushes I found it to be just to big for me, give it away and bought a S and I like it, you don't have to stick your hand in so deep and it's plenty big for me.

I have done it a few times but prefer a somewhat wider bowl to put my soap in.

Well,

I have placed the S-Scuttle on my wish list and forwarded it to the Wife and Son. I hope that I can enjoy some warm shaves in my near future.
