Savile Row 3324/3824 vs THE WORLD

Good afternoon gents,

After doing a fair amount of research, I've come to the conclusion that SR makes marvelous shaving brushes. I find it almost impossible to find negative attention drawn to these beauties. However, most attention these brushes is dated quite a few years and I want to know how they hold up to today's standards.

They seem like a fantastic size, medium density, super soft tips and great flow through. I am primarily a face latherer and have a strong hunch that these would make an excellent addition to my current arsenal of TGN Finest, Chubby 2 Super, Rooney 1/2, Semogue/Omega boars and so on.

How would you compare these brushes to Simpsons, Rooneys, etc. in all respective attributes? Are there people still out there giving these gems the love they deserve?

I have several brushes in my sights, including a M&F 1-2XL, Rooney 1-2xl, Shavemac D01, and so on.

Yes, SBAD is a hell of an ailment :)

Thanks guys

Savile Row is still a top choice. The Silvertip has all the attributes you mentioned going for it, plus it never seems to change from year to year (the one major overhaul a few years back when it was de-lofted notwithstanding, an excellent improvement), which in this case is a good thing: no guessing on feel, performance, etc., necessary. I happen to think the SR Silvertip hair is a click better than the standard Shavemac ST, though they remain kissing cousins. It has been, and continues to be, an excellent all-rounder.

Does it provide any scrub? I've read about the octopus suction phenomenon which translates to scrub for me.

Safe assumption?

I've posted many times on how good my SR3824 is. It's one of my favourite brushes from the engraved handle, curvy shape and beautiful hooked tip badger hair knot. I use it regularly and am never disappointed. Makes for a great bowl lathering brush as well as face lathering brush.

I suspect it's made by Shavemac for QED/SR but am just basing it on handle shape/material, knot characteristics, engraved handle, performance and price. :wink2:

No scrub, no scritch, a perfect brush.

It's a HOF brush and well worth the $130 or so price tag.

Mine came New in box from the BST for around $100 and I've seen them used for around $85 if my memory is correct.

One of the best brushes out there, regardless of price point.

I'll preface this by saying this brush is an amazing performer. It whips up lather like a champ. I do have a few criticisms of it though. If you are a face latherer you may not like the feeling of the point of the bulb on your face. I have to push the brush into my face to get it to splay a bit so I don't feel it wiggling on my face. It is pillowy soft when using painting strokes though. There is really not a lot of scrub to the brush, so if you like that in a face lathering brush you may want to look elsewhere. The savile row etching started to wear off after only 4 or 5 weeks of use as well. I've learned this brush very well and, like I said earlier, it's a great performing brush but I'm still on the hunt for something better. That's why I have a 2XL on the way!!

I can't imagine ever parting with mine. Truely a unique lathering experience with it. The handle is one of a kind and one of the most comfortable out there. The knot is similar to my Thater two band bulb.... but with just a bit less backbone. Similar density. I love it.

brucered talked me into the SR 3824..... along with a couple other brushes. You can see why above ^^ :wink2:

Me citizen, what Thater are you referring to?

Pretty sure Ben's got a 4125/2 two band bulb. I have a similar 4125/1 that hasn't been dethroned as my number one brush over about 8 others. I've been trying to dial in a three brush rotation, but the Thater and the 3124 have made it difficult to compete. They're both fantastic.

How are these brushes for soaps? Particularly harder soaps like MWF?

I've never had any trouble using the SR 3824 with hard soaps. You may have to load a little longer and add a little more water as you load..... but as long as your prep and loading technique are sound.... this brush will work with anything.
