Sam Adams Winter Sampler

Commander Yellow Pantyhose
Has anyone picked up one of these this year? And if you did were you as happy as I was that it did NOT include that god awful Cranberry Lambic?

I think I got a sampler over the summer with some blueberry and a dark beer I didn't like. I saw the winter sampler, but wasn't sure about the chocolate so I passed.

I've never met anyone who thought the lambec was even palatable, let alone good. I can't believe this beer ever made it past the experimental brewing stage let alone into production and distribution.

Hmm, I think the summer sampler was Boston Lager, Light Boston Lager, Pale Ale, Blackberry Wit and their new Latitude 48 (IPA). I'm guessing the Latitude 48 was the dark beer you didn't like? I don't think there are ever any stouts or even their Black Lager in the summer pack.

As to the Chocolate Bock, its a winner. If you didn't like the Latitude 48, no worries. Thats an IPA, which is a very bitter beer. The Chocolate Bock is a nice maltly Bock beer with some good roasted characteristics, aged on a bed of cocoa nibs for a great chocolate aroma and flavor.

It's a good sampler. Even though I don't mind it the white ale seems out of place. It's pretty fruity, light and has a stronge apricot note.

I mostly steer clear of the Winter sampler. I've been hooked on the Latitude 48 when my Sierra Nevada is out, but I'm picky about SA beers sometimes. Maybe my palette isn't as refined but I sometimes wonder are they making beer or baking cookies?

But still: Latitude 48:thumbup1:

Yup, just finished mine off. Good, but I won't be getting another one this year. As Monkeyboy said, the white ale does seem out of place; I think they should replace it with their (underrated) cream stout. The chocolate bock was interesting, but I wouldn't buy the sampler just for that.

It seems like they always include the obligatory "dessert" based beer. Cranberry Lambic was horrid, as if they were trying to make the worst beer ever. Glad it's gone.

I've been on the lookout for the Winter Pack for a while now with no luck. I guess down here we are the last to get anything. And I agree with the previous post about the cream stout, it is fantastic.

Hah, that's funny. I picked up a six pack of the Cranberry Lambic this past week and thought it was an interesting beer. It's not what I'd call gross by any stretch of the imagination. I found the Sam Adams Blackberry Witbier to be so much worse. I've also tried Red Hook IPA which may have been spoiled because neither me nor any of my buddies could finish a bottle. There are a few others that I really don't like, but I can't say the Lambic is among them. To each his own I suppose. :biggrin1:

The biggest problem is that its not even a real lambic. Track down a bottle of Cantillon and you will find a world of difference.

Anyone tried making a beer float with the Chocolate Bock? Or making a beer float in general? You know, like a root beer float but with real beer? I've tried it with a couple black lagers and they ended up pretty good... I should try it with Chocolate Bock.
