What's new

Rough shave this morning...

Last couple weeks I've been trying out a sample pack, and found I really like the Israeli crystals. I've had BBS shaves consistantly every time with my trusty cheap tweezerman brush and some col conks almond, amber, or bay rum.

The only thing that I changed today was trying out the lime variety, and also trying to load the brush a little better than usual. I suppose I also usually do a second XTG the other direction and didn't include it, but after my first one I didn't feel I needed it.

I ended up with five or six weepers on my jawline, and overall it was just not a pleasant shave. My ATG was draggy, but it's possible it's a result of not doing a second XTG.

I didn't get a good vibe from the lime, and really feel like maybe that's part of the problem. Don't know if the scent was throwing me off or if maybe that particular scent also isn't as lubricating or something?

Anyone else find that one scent vs another of the same brand will give drastically different shaving results?

This is a guess but maybe the soap which probably has more acid in it from the lime is reacting on your face differently then other soaps. You might have sensitive skin so you need a milder soap or shave cream maybe something with aloe which is very good for the skin. Also soaps with shea butter is excellent as well.

That's entirely possible. I don't think of myself as having sensitive skin, and I had used the lime one other time without issues, but it could definitely be the added acid.

The only time I've noticed "off" shaves is when I don't spend enough time with my prep. Usually it'll happen when I rush through my lathering and don't work it in enough.

I just rushed through a shave and came out with less than great results as well. It happens--just remember to take your time and I'm sure better shaves will come.

Thankfully, off/bads shaves do not occur often for me. Just like a previous poster, they happen when my prep is not up to snuff and when I'm feeling a little lazy. So, the key is not to let your technique lapse.

I notice this exact same thing. If I don't take enough time to brush and lather my face, (about two minutes) my razor always pulls the hair more and I end up with a bloody mess. Recently this was with my gold Merkur slant.... Not a night I wish to remember.

I've been using this razor and wetshaving for almost six years, so it's just odd that I suddenly had this issue this morning. I don't feel like I was rushing, but perhaps I was and just didn't realise it.

All I know is that I better be more careful to not rush once I start trying a straight!

Moslty I get weepers when trying a new/more aggressive combo of razor and blade. Can't say lather problems have ever led to them.

I have conk bay rum, almond, and lime. For some reason, the first 3 or 4 times I used the lime it did not agree with me, lather was not as good. Never had any problems with the bay rum or almond. I actually quit using the lime. Then about a month or two later I tried it again and it has worked good ever since. I have no idea why.

I get a bad shave from time to time and it sucks. I was shaving a few weeks ago and the straight I was using was pulling bad. I thought it might need honing, so I put it up and broke out a superspeed. Still bad shave. I just quit and went to bed. A couple of days later I shaved again with the same straight without honing it and everything went great.
