I was generously PIF'd a Merkur 38c barber pole. Holy cow batman, this thing shave so comfortable. I have not used any of my antique store finds since.
I started modern, went vintage for awhile and then came back to modern - which is where I will be staying. The Muhle R89 Rosegold, EJ DE89 Barleycorn and Feather AS-D1 are more than I need forever.
I prefer vintage.
They were made back in the day when things were built to last, Now most things are made from cheap crap.
Vintage can also be cheaper.
(I'm not saying I Dislike modern, I just don't have much experience with a modern razor.)
Ilike both. Vintage for the history and Nostalgia, Modern for a change of pace and more aggressive shave. Granted, my only real exposure to vintage DE's are a couple of 50's and 60's Super Speeds, which are very mild. I don't use the SS's that much but just think it's pretty cool that a razor that is 50+ years old still works as good as it was the day it was new.
Sure better materials were used back in the day, but in all honesty I think today's 'modern' DE's are just as good and are not inferior. I mean seriously, what are you doing with your razor to really have to worry about it's durability?! Are you using it as a door stop? I have total confidence that my DE89, HD 34C and Mergress XL will be around in 50 years as long as they are cared for and used properly and not abused.
I thought I was a vintage guy until I tried the Muhle R41. Now I think I prefer the modern razors but will still hold on to my birth year razors. Looking to get an all stainless razor soon!!
