After looking on the net it seems to me that rock deodorant and alum stone is the same thing. The price difference can be big rock deodorant for $2.99 and alum for around $11. Any info on this

I think the difference is the type of Alum. I believe most deodorant alum is made of Ammonium Alum, where the traditional Alum Block is made from Potassium Alum...

Yes my rock deodorant says Ammonium Alum
I found a deodorant rock for $2 made from 99.9% Potassium Alum. First time I tried it, gave me some pain. I've been using it on other parts to smooth the surface, so I'll be giving it another try on my face sometime soon.
The heck with it! I built up some lather and gave my face the business. Shaved my right side normally and roughed up the left side with overly aggressive passes and a nick or two. I can't tell the difference in the mirror, nor can I feel one. The $2 alum deodorant block I got at Sunflower Market worked just fine. The first time I used it, I had some noticeable red marks from (I assume) the roughness of the block. I'd say just make sure it's Potassium Alum and that you smooth the surface you intend to use on your face.
I've tried these in the past, but my pits were just to strong at the end of the day.
Ammmonium alum stings a whole heck of a lot more than potassium and isn't meant for tender, freshly shaven skin.
This is pretty much what I got. Says it's made of potassium alum, just like the one I found locally.
