Ripples in the leather

I bought a couple of used hanging strops on ebay. One looks fairly old and the other looks like an almost new Dovo linen/leather strop. The leather is slightly turned up on the sides so that it forms a concave dish in the middle. I flattened it out with some books kind of but it's still somewhat uneven with some edge parts flat and other slightly raised still. Is this bad? Does the strop need to be perfectly flat? and if so does anyone have a cool trick to flatten it out better?

yes it has to be perfectly flat. You can try hanging a weight from the bottom but many times these old strops are beyond help. Without a picture it's hard to advise you. Often times if nothing else works soaking the strop in water and then letting it slowly dry will get many imperfections out but the strop will never look the same again.

Something else you can try too is to use fromm strop conditioner; then hanging the strop as if you are going to use it, grab the end with one hand and run the heel of your other hand up and down the strop with the intention to straighten it out, do the same with the other (non finishing) side.

Even better, do a search here for "strop cleaning" and "strop restore", there are some good tips given.

Good luck
