RIP Ray Schulman

Ray Schulman, co-founder of and bassist and composer with the English progressive band Gentle Giant has died. Although he never received the notoriety of other bassists, he deserves to be recognized among the very best in rock.

This is sad news. Ray is one of my favorite musicians and was always a pleasure to see how much fun he was having. Always a big smile while playing those extremely complex pieces. In the early 70's I was always pestering my local record store to order in the albums.

If anyone hasn't seen it before, there is an incredible video of them playing live on an unusual TV show where the audience would arrive without idea what kind of band would be playing that day. It was a revelation for me to see this video the first time! Only knowing them from listening to the albums, I had never realized that they could play this complex music live with so many different instrument changes.
