What's new

Retro look.

Most of us on here i would say are using razors that you can call retro, both the early de's and straights are from a period we now call retro fashion, so apart from razors, do you like the retro look in clothing, gents wearing a nice 50's style suit, tie and hat, females in the pencil skirts, or do you think its old a old fashioned look, i am involved in the burlesque scene (i dont dance though:w00t:) and this fashion at the moment seems very popular, especially at burlesque nights, and i am always amazed at how many young people wear the retro look.

I am a big fan of classic 50's style fitted suits. Even before Mad Men brought the fashion back in a big time way I have always thought that there is nothing better looking than a properly tailored blue suit for the office and a black suit(some times 3 piece) for evening attire.
Saying that I can't get into the retro skinny ties.

Yep, I have just walked into my office and taken off my trench coat.

I'm mainly into accessories, though. Apart from the shaving stuff I use vintages watches, lighters, pens. Most of the stuff in my kitchen is vintage where it can be.

I'm guessing you have been to look at The Fedora Lounge?

I wear farily contemporay suits but usually with some older sensibilities. Often wear a fedora, pocket hankie.

It's a little ironic for me. I likr to dress relatively modern with vintage twists. When it comes to the home, I am the opposite. One of my favorite fashion accessories though is a brown vintage sportcoat. The original owner was my father. He was so excited when he saw me wearing it.

I also happen to think that, in the uk at least, fashion is turning full circle, young lads wear waistcoats and hats, young ladies wear more skirts and high heels, it brings a bit of glamour from a jeans and t shirt.

I enjoy that look when going out to a dressy place with my wife. I have a bunch of my father's old ties from years ago. I think they show some real chracter and they are also a conversation starter with other people. I also have some of his old sport coats. My wife enjoys dressing in pencil skirts with nylons and high heels.

Most people think dressing retro, vintage, classic, whatever is all about the fedora, suit, and shoes. Not so..

There were plenty of people who did not work in a white collar environment and didn't need to dress up for work. These men and woman needed to wear hard wearing denim, chambray, cotton clothes that were meant to take a beating and get dirty.

It is currently known as Workwear. Workwear is very popular in Japan and growing in the U.S. Japanese companies make high quality, excellent reproductions of classic style denim, shirt, chore jackets, etc.
U.S. companies like Levi's, The Gap, J. Crew, currently sell chambray workwear styled shirts of varying degrees of quality and style.
Also Levi's is currently offering in their U.S. stores a workwear pant. It has a belted back, selvedge, and designated the "201 Workwear Jeans".

On a casual level I am headed back towards an Ivy/Preppy look having rediscovered oxford Cloth button downs and madras shirts from Brooks Brothers and wearing chinos, aiming for a timeless look yet not looking like I am historical re-enactor.

For my professional wardrobe I'm wearing two button suits with side vents, french cuff spread collar dress shirts and high quality leather soled shoes.

That scene is popular over here as well, the classic denim trousers, checked shirts and braces and a nice pair of brouges, or dungarees with a flat cap:thumbup1:

"Back in the day"... hats were popular wear, regardless of your working class.
Fedoras were not just for white collar guys in suits and ties.
Those denim wearing blue collar guys wore them too.
It's why I get puzzled every time I hear someone say a fedora isn't right because they don't wear a suit enough to warrant it.

Love the photos:001_cool:

That center photo with the kid in the middle is actually Elvis Presley and his parents.

I don't have a horse, and you really need one to pull it off well.

I never recognised elvis, funnily enough I have never been a elvis fan, but my friend has thrown in an old bluesy elvis track into her routine, and I have to say its very good, quite a topical post, I do love the old black and white american photos, something about them.
