Restoring old razors?

i just got an old Gillette Milord off of ebay for about $16 after shipping...obvious signs of tarnish. it came with a case, and a second small gold plated case with 4 blades.

i would like to take a shot at getting it nice and cleaned up. the picture showed quite a bit of tarnishing. not looking to put too much more money in it.

any direction or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've had pretty good success rinsing it off in some water, throw it in a cup with a healthy submersion of barkeepers friend till the razor is completely covered. Then I have two brushes I use. I use a nylon brush, very firm from home depot. This I'd use on anything. Brush it, scrub it, brush it, scrub it, get all the corners, rinse and repeat as needed. For the razors that need a heavy working over I whip out the brass brush and go to town. If it has anything like plastic or bakelite or any kind of a handle that isn't metal I would only use the barkeepers friend on the metallic head. After it is thoroughly cleaned to my liking I dunk it in rubbing alcohol for about 10 minutes and that's about it. But there is no one sure way to clean everything. So I would test your razor in an inconspicuous place to see if the barkeepers friend is indeed friendly to it. If you'd like to further clean it up many here like to use polish after-wards. I have not used polish on mine, but if you choose to do so I hear great things about MAAS. Others here would do something similar to what I do but instead of barkeepers friend they prefer scrubbing bubbles. I find scrubbing bubbles to be less effective then my aforementioned Barkeeper's, but YMMV. Good luck and enjoy the shaves.

toothpaste and an old toothbrush are a mild polisher for gold.... :thumbup1:

+1

Never use anything stronger than toothpaste on a gold-plated razor. Even BKF is too harsh for the lacquer . . . and once the lacquer is gone, the gold will follow. Trust me!!
