Restoring a brush, question on the knot type

I going to do my first brush restoration, and it is my grandfather's brush so I'm very excited to use this, however I am having a hard time deciding what type of hair to use.
Right now I am using a Vulfix Boar and I really love it, except I wish it were a little denser. I only use hard soaps so I like the Boar and I like to face lather, but the brush handle that I am restoring is 23mm. On the goldennib site they do have a couple of boar knots however the only one that would fit would be the 20mm one and it states that the base is actually 18-20mm so that would leave excess room and I don't know if it would work well.

So, that leaves me with the Badgers to look at. I am guessing that a Finest in 22mm that is extra packed would be more what I want since it would probably have good backbone. Anyone have any experience with the goldennib knots that would recommend a good one for soaps?

Thanks,
J.

Sounds like your on the right track with the finest. I have done one restore with a UK knot and I set the loft a little lower, I think it was around 50ish, and the brush has some great backbone. I actually just ordered a 26mm finest and hope to be gluing the knot in today or tomorrow. Hope that helps.

PS-This all boils down to setting the loft a little lower if you want backbone vs. high loft for a floppier brush.

I used the 23x76 UK Super knot on my brush. I set it very deep for a 46 mm loft. It is a very nice brush...soft but with plenty of backbone.

If you cannot modify the depth you set it in the old handle be careful to order a know that will result in about the loft you want. The UK knot I used would be pretty floppy I think if it was not buried about an inch in the handle.

I think the 20mm boar would be too loose in your handle.

It is a lucite handle, so I don't know if it could be modified (plus I don't have a tool to do that even it it could be modified, or the know how). It whole in the handle does go pretty deep, but I don't know if it would be a full inch. I will have to check on that to find out how deep it is.

The 22mm Finest w/ extra hair is 24mm above the plug and it DOES NOT compress. That means that if you want to set it deep enough for it to be scrubby like a boar brush (47-48mm loft), you need a hole that is slightly less than an inch in diameter. Hope that helps

That's the knot I used in this brush. And yes, if you want to set the knot deep, you'll need to enlarge the diameter to 24mm or more.

Worth the effort!

Does it need to be set deep? The site says 65mm which seems a little high but boring out an old Ever-Ready makes me nervous. I already cracked a few.

No, you don't have to set it deep. I just wanted a shorter loft. The plug is only about 6 or 7mm as I recall, so as long as you have a few mm beyond that, I would imagine you'd be fine.

Even with a long loft, I don't think these knots would become floppy. They're very firm and dense.
