Restoration Help - Concrete inside?

Hey All,

So I picked up an old wooden brush in hopes of restoring it. I drilled a hole and started yanking hairs. After the initial layer of hairs I normally use a forstner bit/dremel/drill to remove the remaining "junk". Well... something went horribly wrong this time. Whatever is in there is hard as the dickens... I broke one drill bit and the forstner and dremel are just getting dull. What on earth could it be? I can't crack it out... nothing. Its like stone.

Got any pics?

I think I would go for a carbide tipped standard twist drill to get most of that out first. A masonary bit could work too...but careful as it has flutes that could catch and spin that handle.

A Dremel stone or sanding drum ought to cut the remainder out after you get through that stuff.

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like the metal part is threaded into the handle. Can you unscrew this part? If so, maybe you can remove it and save the handle. Larry

The metal part is just a little ring... popped it out. It's the black stuff that was under the hair that's the issue.

BTW, that is a very nice looking handle. Once you get the black matter out you should end up with a real winner.

You are wearing a mask for this right?

I wonder what was used back in the day for adhesives. I had some brown hard stuff in my last handle that went to light powder on drilling, but it seemed to have some characterisics of stone too. Not nearly as hard as this junk though it seems.

Thanks... that little row of marks was me.... was trying to dremel it. I am hoping to sand it a little and then refinish with poly. I am going to go to home depot this weekend and grab some carbide. I tried a masonry bit. Worked a little, but also very little progress. I think I need some carbide bits and a carbide dremel bit to finish it. Whatever it is its hard as.....
