Replating service?

A short time ago one of the members was offering replating of razors.
I can't locate the thread. Does anyone remember the name?

You're welcome, Steve. Hopefuly, someone will also shed a little light on prices for replating razors.

:cool::cool:

I offered to re-plate razors in trade for shaving stuff.I'm a jeweler and I have plating equipment that I very seldom use.I thought it would be cool to plate a few razors for those in need of re-plating.I'm fairly new to DE shaving so I want to try all the nice things.I have no clue what the going rate for re-plating is.I know it takes a lot of time to do the job right.I electro-strip the old plate off,sand out light scratches,I don't change the lines of the razor or round off corners,polish,electro-clean,then re-plate.I don't know how long I will continue to offer this service as I'm getting a lot of response.I might have to move to the vender thread and make it part of my regular work day.:eek:

Thanks for the info, Michael. I understand the time constraints. Those "day jobs" do seem to get in the way, don't they? And it sounds like if you charged your "going rate" for your time, probably no one could afford re-plating. I'd just like to know how much someone who is providing this service as a business would charge. I just don't have a feel if it's ~$20 or ~$100+. It may or may not be something I would want to try. It seems to be more of a hobby type activity that can't be done economically as a business. Thanks again. They do look really nice!

I'm also just not sure what it is worth... I'm wary of throwing a number out there, because I don't want to low-ball someone who is offering such a generous service. I don't even know what the materials cost... let alone how much time would be invested by someone doing it. Someone in Eastern Europe mentioned getting it done at a professional place for $9 a month or so back, and that seems ridiculously cheap... I think I'd probably pay at least double that, but I wouldn't question someone for charging much more knowing how many steps are involved.

I was wondering about prices myself the other day as I'd like to get 1-2 of mine replated. This seems to be a murky area and I haven't seen any figures on it that are posted publicly. I don't know if there is a "going rate" for that service, but if you're getting a lot of response, then your customers obviously think that it's worth whatever they're trading. That wouldn't be difficult to imagine as they probably wanted to get rid of the stuff anyway.

If you'd like to charge people for your service, you might try calculating the time spent on each type of razor (3 piece, TTO, etc), then figure out what you'd be happy with on a per hour basis. Then post that and see what happens. Posting your rates would help us out as we'd know the cost upfront depending on the type of razor that we had. If you didn't post the rates (I'm not even sure that posting them would be allowed, actually), that would be fine but at least you'd have a ready, consistent answer for everyone that contacted you.

If you begin charging for your service, I'd imagine that the number of people wanting razors replated would decline since people would have to pay instead of getting rid of things they are willing to trade. That wouldn't be good for us, of course, but it might keep you from being overwhelmed. Also, a limitation on how much people are willing to spend will be the price of NOS razors that are for sale, since anyone could just buy one of these and forget about replating. That might be a consideration when you figured out what you wanted to charge if you decide to go that route.
