Reformulating the reformulations

Okay, so I've been going a bit soap crazy as of late. And I'm also a tallow fiend.

I love the old stock Trumpers, but had to pay dearly to get one of the last of the Mohicans. And do I need to say anything about our dear English Fern? Going the way of the dodo, I'm afraid....:frown:

So, intead of simply rolling over to get kicked in the nuggets by the malevolent anti-tallow forces of doom:mad:, I recently hatched a little sceme in my wee tiny brain of mine....

What say yee to this:

Take your favorite tallow free reformulation of choice: Trumper's, for example....what would happen if you ran a puck of new Trumpers through the ol' cheese grater, and also ran through a puck of nice and tallowy AOS unscented? Mix the shreds all together, and viola! Tallowy goodness once again?

Or is it destined for disaster? Should I just accept the shining, glycerin and palm oil soylent green future that awaits us all?

If you haven't tried Gold Dachs Spezial yet, it'll help you get over the reformulation blues. It did me.

No, no, no, NO!

That's crazy talk!

Here:

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Might be worth the effort, but I'd start small. Just enough to get, say, 5 or so shaves from the mix. If you don't like the mix, at least you still have a nearly full puck of AoS and whatever else you used (which you can keep or sell/trade).

Fight the power!

Welcome to The Resistance!

Good advice! I would have gone in whole hog.....

I'm gonna make my own! I recently rendered a nice hunk of beef fat in my kitchen and currently have a solid puck of tallow sitting in my freezer just waiting for me to turn it into soap. I have clay, lanolin, sheabutter, olive, castor, coconut and palm oils. i have essential oils to use as a fragrance, and I have the gumption to do it.

In the meantime, I want you all if you can to give me your favorite properties of a good tallow soap like -hardness vs softness, Lather- creamyness vs bubblyness, scent - strong or light etc.

Thanks!

The consistency of Omega (black tub) and the scent of sandalwood, not iced.

Go easy on the clay. I used a soap with clay in it, and if fely "slimy".

I don't want slimy on my face, I want clean and slick.

And tallow soap should be creamy like a head on a pint of Guiness:thumbup1:

If I wanted bubbly lather, I'd be a fan of Williams.

Which I am not!

I think that not only is this plan not destined for disaster, but that it would produce the desired effect. You would likely get a great product out of this. You could do it in small batches as an experiment, so you could decide the mixture that produced the most sublime soap. Go for it!

This is giving me the idea of grating some of my DR Harris Alrington and combining it with just maybe some unscented SCS soap. I am only contemplating this because I get a little irritation from the DR Harris, maybe from the scent?? But, I love the lather and the shave, and I don't want to get rid of it.
Anyone think this would help the irritation, or just ruin the integrity of the original product?

Thanks,
J.

Seraphim,

I'm not sure this would produce the effect you are after. While I think the tallow-based English Fern and Trumper's were great soaps, I prefer the Palm based Trumper's to any other soap that is currently being made including Art of Shaving. If you haven't already, you may want to see if you can tell a difference between the palm and tallow versions of Trumper's. I honestly couldn't tell a difference in performance between the two of them.

I have also found while it is relatively easy to make your own quality bath soap from saponified lard or tallow, it is much more difficult to make your own shave soap that provides the same level as cushion the best commercial shave soaps provide.

I got some irritation from the Arlington as well. I believe it to come from the cirus backbeat.

I'd suggest trying a diferent scent altogether, as what you are suggesting is simply diluting tghe Arlington to a point at which it would no longer irritate. It would most likely also no longer smell like Arlington.

I will have to try the new school Trumpers. I certainly hope it is as good as the old

Isn't that the truth, which is why i have 15 batches under my belt, but dog gone it I think i've done it at last. It's actually a pretty difficult task to accomplish to get one that measures up to say a shaving soap like Tabac. There is a lot more to soap making than just throwing ingredients together and plugging the oils into a lye calculator to get a safe amount of lye and liquid to add to your oils.

The makers of Tabac probably went through many, many batches, refining it as they went, to get the formulation they liked the best.

Glad I'm not alone on the irritation from this soap then. Maybe this is just a good excuse to pick up the Marlborough.
