Refinishing Vielong B0370524

I used my Vielong B0370524 24 mm horsehair brush before the black paint on the collar fully cured and then scratched it up as a result of a few drops, so I finally got around to refinishing the brush.

I inserted 1-3/4 x 5/8 inch tabs made from thin cardboard (from those things we all get in the mail) to protect the bristles and sanded from 240 to 2000 grit. I chose water-based semi-gloss polyurethane which I am applying with a rag. I am not setup to handle the fumes from lacquer, and I did not want to be rushed by CA.

Took a few minutes to get the hang of sanding the brush handle's shape but, like anything, you figure it out as you go.

The brush hanging after 1 of 6 coats.

During the sanding process - before wrapping the tabs with blue painter's tape.

After sanding the brush. The cardboard tabs are no longer fully inserted. You can see where the cardboard tabs did their job of protecting the bristles from the sandpaper. Thank you, cardboard tabs!

Down in the laboratory. I used on old pair of Calvin Klein briefs to apply the poly - my nod to Back to the Future :). I ended up not using the Q-tip. Note the Minwax aerosol lacquer in the upper right - great stuff for sealing your JNATs.

I completed all 6 coats and am happy with the results.

That said, the brush does look a bit naked compared to its original 2-tone finish.

If I were to now redo the job, I would probably stain the handle to add more contrast between the handle and the white hair, and think about using a stain with black coloring on the collar. But I would not repaint the collar.

After.
