Refinishing advice

I have a beautiful two band badger brush that I want to keep for a very long time. The brush is in excellent condition and there is nothing wrong with the handle except for the bottom of the handle where some of finish has started to deteriorate a bit.

Any advice on how to clean it up and get it back into tip top shape?

Keep in mind that you are at risk of loosing the labeling on the bottom of the handle. You didn't make any comments about the material of the handle. I'm going to guess that it is a wood handled brush. If the labeling is important then do as you have started to take good pictures so you can restore it if you need to or want to.

It looks like the clear cote is deteriorating. With care, you might be able to gently sand it off without disturbing the labeling, then apply some clear urethane.

Best of luck with it. It looks like a beautiful brush.

it sort of looks like it needs a paint touchup with the blue and gold / yellow? stripes , and then a re-coating of clear..

Thanks. I should have stated that it is a wooden handle right off the bat.

I was think the same thing about the process of restoring it. I used my fingernail to do a scratch test in a small area and it flaked off quite easily. I think I might try covering up the gold areas and using some micro mesh pads to lightly sand the surface and then apply several coats of clear coat.

2 pack
or
2 part
clear
is like two part epoxy, one sets the other
oil? no recommend any oil what so ever, once oil is on it nothing will ever stick, and I LOVE oil and wax
the only one is boiled linseed oil which will set hard, it is what old oil based paint was, even then thats a nice brush, no oil, please no! :D

That brush will really sparkle when it gets glossy.
