Red Tip dilemma

Ok, so I have my trusty Red Tip and after much use the paint is coming off about every day. I like my razor a lot and thought about going to the hobby shop grabbing a bottle of testers that is close or possible picking up two or three to make a match. I work at a paint store so eye matching colors for contractors is a daily duty.

Has anyone done this? Is there a better paint to use.

Now for my dilemma. I am doing this for my own personal use. But I won't be the only person to own this razor. I might upgrade to one in better condition someday. I may keep it until I die and then it's sold/ given away. Anyway I don't want my touch up to become someone else's rip off.

So do I paint it a red that will be obvious to anyone trying to buy it down the road. Or am I just worrying for no reason. Or will the testors paint just wear off? Is it unethical to do that to an old razor?

What say you?

Its yer razor dood! If you want it lookin sharp - touch it up. If you sell it - let ppl know. I'd expect the same if I was buyin yer used car - original paint or after market? Fair to do as long as you do the right thing if you move it along.

And the Testers - I don't know lots here, but Testers apparently dries quite quickly since it is for models. And, the quick drying type of paint may not be as durable. For the razor you want it durable and a different type of enamel is supposedly better. But, I can't remember which!! You will find it if you look. Maybe this is just a comment against using the Testers! Then again, I could be full of sh....

I say, a red tip is a red tip and great for shaving. Who cares what it looks like, as long as it shaves the way you want it to.

If you have one that is in need of touch up and it makes you feel better about yourself, touch it up. As the previous poster mentioned, let someone know if you decide to sell it. Of course, I don't know why you would.

I happened into one in really great shape , so I have not had to ask myself your troubling question. You need to ask yourself if you are a reseller, collector or user. A reseller should leave it as is and let it bring what the market bears, IMHO. A collector might act in the same manner, but I might see some restoration for the trophy case. A user shouldn't mind it one bit. I haven't used the tip once to shave with mine.

If you use the search, you can find all kinds of links on this. Here is one http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=25786&highlight=redtip+paint

I read this and it gave me what I need to know. Another reply mentioned that testors dries quickly. So I'll avoid that one, since it won't level out and be smooth.

I'll mask it off and check out krylon colors. Unless of course after the little remaining paint is stripped off I find I like the look of an all silver heavy superspeed.

I don't have enough time this a.m. but someone was selling a repainted red tip on BS&T about 2 weeks ago that was an amazing match. I'll try to check it out. Please don't retouch it till I found you that link and you get the right match. I completely agree with RocketMan, go for it.

I have one that I'm going to re-paint, as soon as I locate the Krylon International Harvester Red paint. (I spent a summer as a teenager in the midwest on a wheat harvest crew, so kinda like that connection) I also have one in decent shape paint-wise, and have the Red Tip Custom Super Deluxe that HerrHepcat did such a nice job creating. Finally, I have one that nearly all the red paint came off when I cleaned it, and I really like the new look of the all silver superspeed with the Red Tip knurling.

You can't have too many Red Tips, IMHO!

That was an amazing match up. It made the thing look new. I won't touch it until I know the right color to use.

The 'right color to use'? You could always strip the red paint from it and then paint the knob with a medium 'Tan'.

Some say go for it, others say don't touch it! It's really a personal dilemma/decision.

+1

I do not know what else I can add... If you intend to use it as your daily shaver, then yes, I would repaint it so it looks all nice. If you intend to keep it in a cabinet as a collector item, then, no... It's a bit tricky how everyone sees this. Some are strongly against it and other will say, it looks better, go for it!

I spoke to Rainman, he doesn't know the name of the "colorist" as he bought the razor from ebay. He sent me the name of the seller. I sent the seller a sweet note asking for the info. Keep your fingers crossed. I'll keep you posted. Darjeeling

A few weeks ago someone posted a picture of a redtip with all of the red paint removed, presumably with paint stripper. I thought it looked pretty nice, so that would be another option.

An afternoon spent in the futile search for Krylon spray paint. Thanks to my states lenient laws concerning the people who commit graffiti stores are not even carrying it. And the ones that do only sell rustoleum. Only the big box stores carry any spray paint at all.

I'd order it online but I don't want to spend 15 or 20 bucks on something I'll use once and only about 1/4 ounce of anyway.

I still would like to see kids caught in the act of graffiti should have their index finger sliced off. But that's just me.

Thanks a lot. I appreciate the help. I really do.

I heard back from the ebay seller. She said her husband custom mixes the paint. Not much help there. Get some International Harvester and try it on a piece of white paper for a test. Go from there. Enjoy and keep us posted.

Automobile touch-up paint. $3.50 @ Wal-Mart.

Tough paint, very low shine, easy applicator.

GM and Nissan both make very similar dark reds. Just takes a little testing to find the right one.

If the paint is coming off "almost every day" I suspect someone already re-painted it. The original, factory paint doesn't do that. My two cents: if the razor is intended to be a user, the paint on the numbers doesn't matter. No reason to repaint it. If it is to be re-sold as a collectible, painting it is deceptive and dishonest.
