Recommendations for a patchouli cologne?

I'm looking for a cologne that has patchouli as its middle and base note - I think that's how you say it. Top notes as I understand it leave rather quickly while its the middle and base notes that stick around. Basically I'm looking for a cologne that is more patchouli than any thing else and you get that patchouli smell pretty much for as long as you're wearing it. I already use Hugo Boss which has fir balsam, cedarwood and patchouli as its base notes but I'm looking for something a little stronger in the patchouli department.

Recommendations?

Caswell & Massey Aura of Patchouli is a good one, inexpensive, too. Givenchy Gentleman has a strong patchouli note. It's not straight patchouli, though. It can be had inexpensively, as well. You will probably have to order it online, because I do not think it is carried in any stores anymore.

I have no personal experience with it, but "Smoke & Beads" from Saint Charles Shave is supposedly a quite strong patchouli-based fragrance and it's fairly economical as well. I believe you can get a small sample for very little cash, and Sue is a member here and a great lady. Worth a try, IMO.

It almost sounds as if you want patchouli essential oil. There are lots of relatively inexpensive patchouli perfumes out there. I hope you get more recommendations.

I graduated from high school in 1971, so the smell of patchouli oil triggers memories of hippie chicks from days gone by. Nice smell. Nice associations. Hmmm.

I graduated HS in 1992 so I'm a young'un. :tongue_sm

I've tried a patchouli oil "roll-on" before. It was a really small 2 inch long bottle with a roll ball. But it was too strong. Not looking for overwhelming but something I can smell and smell it for a good portion of the day rather than be gone in an hour.

Smoke and Beads Eau De Toilette - Patchouli, Sandalwood, Sweet orange and other Citrus fruits blend in this upbeat version of the still popular Patchouli. Not for the faint-at-heart.

Must be some strong stuff.

Most of these I've read about say something about smelling like a smoke filled gentleman's club - which is something I don't want to smell like. lol! All those tones of tobacco, leather, etc. mixed with patchouli just doesn't sound appealing to me at all.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Just FYI, the "new" or reformulated Givenchy Gentleman can be found in stores. The "classic" or old version can't be. As I'm not familiar with either, I don't guess it matters to me which version I try. Thanks for the rec.

Givenchy Gentleman definitely is worth considering. I once wore it into a Starbucks and a clerk said "Patchouli !", then proceeded to explain to me that patchouli was the scent of choice back in the day of the 60's drug culture. Something about covering up the smell of weed. She spoke as if from personal experience. It was an interesting conversation connected to a fragrance a was wearing.

The old version has a strong civet note as well. I like this once in a while but you have to go light on the sprayer or you can clear out a room in seconds.

My only experience with a Patchuli note was with Givenchy Gentelmen. It was definitely a strong scent, but i liked it quite a bit. Unfortunately, I dropped the nearly full bottle in my kitchen and it shattered. It took about a month to get the smell out of the kitchen, and my broom still puts off a faint aroma. This was about 6 months ago.

Yes, it is very potent, indeed!

Thanks all for the recs. I'll keep my eye out for Givenchy Gentelmen because it seems the be a well liked product in small doses. The "new" version seems to be available at KMart and Sears. We don't have KMart here anymore but I think we still have a Sears so I'll look into it.

I have used Givenchy Gentlemen since my college days. I still have a bottle that I use from time to time. I really like the cologne.
