Recommendation for Aftershave for Sensitive Skin (With or Without Menthol)

Hey All,

So I was looking for some new aftershaves. I have very sensitive skin, am open to trying about any scent (like almond and lime), but am really looking for something that will soothe (maybe with some menthol) and moisturize. Anyone have any recommendations? Right now I am using Proraso Pre/Post Shave. Thanks

Just go to your local drugstore and get what they have on the shelf. I find it is just as good, if not better, for the price than anything else you can buy. I always use witch hazel as a post shave and finish with Nivea Sensitive skin balm or Aqua Velva Ice Blue. Depending on weather conditions like humidity will determine which I use. I have fairly sensitive skin myself and they work great for me.

i've done some research on this subject all over here. top contenders, reasonably priced:
1. speick
thayers witch hazel
proraso sensitive or regular aftershave
pinaud clubman

you need to invest in a quality moisturizer. Alcohol is great for nicks and tightening pores but followed by a good quality moisturizer all over the face, that's the key.
that's why so many still use pinaud though it's alcohol based. balms are also good but why moisturize solely your shaving area? use a good moisturizer.

I agree with those who have suggested the use of a balm/lotion. The benefits are many. Aside from cooling any damage you may have done while shaving, you can pretty much use any cologne or after shave after you slather your face in lotion. Beware, as a lot of products sold at drugstores and department stores are full of crappy synthetic ingredients that have been proven in studies to cause various forms of irritation. There are websites which list these ingredients as well as identify the studies, where applicable, which have identified problems. I have very sensitive skin, and I have found the following products work well for me (my top choice would be the Speick, which I just ordered but have not tried yet. great prices here, even with international shipping http://www.shaving.ie/):

1. Every Man Jack face lotion. This is a very good quality product for the money, and you can sometimes find it at your local walmart. If not, it can be ordered from them online. While not a completely natural product, they do make an effort and leave out many of the very worst ingredients. Works well with no irritation;

2. Proraso Green Tea and Oatmeal pre and post shave cream. This is great stuff. Not perfectly natural, but still a high quality product, and works very well for both pre-shave and as an after shave balm. A little goes a long way.

3. Herban Cowboy Dusk after shave balm. This is all-natural and super cheap. It works very well, also, as a balm. Very nice for not a lot of scratch.

Another one that looks very good, but I have not personally tried, is the Edwin Jagger balm. It is 99+ percent natural. Unfortunately, it is pretty expensive, so that one is on the waiting list. Their soaps are also all (99+) natural, and work very well from my personal experience.

As for a smelly aftershave, wear what you like. Your toilet cannot really be considered complete, however, if you do not have a bottle of Pinaud Clubman hiding somewhere. It really is great stuff, regardless of the price, and you will smell like a man, not a teenage boy or an advertising campagne.

Any aftershave that contains glycerin is worth considering. Several Master's ASes do; the ones I know and like are Bay Rum, Challenge, and Musk. Stephan's Bay Rum doesn't contain glycerin, but it's very mild and soothing (contains lanolin, I think). All of these are very reasonably priced and widely available. I usually get them at Appleton Barber Supply.

Good suggestion.

The Masters range with glycerin may be helpful.

WalMart carries the Stetson Cooling Moisture - it costs about $5, should be nice to your skin, and it has a "menthol" kick to it. Even if you dont like it, you'll get a nice glass bottle for your troubles.

Sorry but I'm a bit confused as to the order of operation... from reading some of the posts here, I'm gathering that you apply the lotion/balm first then follow with a splash AF. I thought it was the other way around? I mean why would you put AS on your face after you've just moisturized and take away all that moisture with alcohol?

What am I missing? I have rather oily skin but at the same time I know I have to moisturize my skin to help prevent possible ingrown hairs after shaving. I use WH directly after shaving then when it dries I follow with AOS Sandalwood AFB. I like the smell but I am worried about it being an oily balm and causing me to break out at some point (although it hasn't yet). I too am looking for an oil-free moisturizer to apply after the WH. As for the scent, I would love it to be Sandalwood.

I have always loved Truefitt&Hill Indian Limes Aftershave Balm. Its very soothing to my allergic and sensitive skin and has a delightful, genuine lime fragrance. Its not cheap however. But worth the $ no doubt,IMO.

You may wish to consider Joe's Razorock offerings: absolutely delightful aftershave (spray) lotions and aftershave waxes in three very nice scents. I use both products together and the result is wonderful. They're not expensive because only a small amount of each is needed.
