Recomendations for a shaving soap/creme with a nice masculine scent?

Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie wet shaver using a DE right now and Taylors sandlewood shaving soap. I have some spare time tomorrow to visit a barber's salon and shop not too far from where I live.

They seem to have a wide range of popular british products like: Geo Trumper, Truefitt, Taylors, Dermalogica, Gentleman's Groom Room, D.R. Harris and Edwin Jagger.

I'm looking for post shave balm, maybe an oil, and a new soap. I just want something masculine - as in not too flowery. I doubt I'll be able to unpack and smell everything they have, so I'm looking for help from my razor brothers :)

I guess this is going to depend on what you consider a manly smell. The GF smelled Tabac when I first got it and went "ohhh that's manly, I like it" While other people feel that while the shave you get from Tabac is excellent it needs to be aired out in your garage for a month before being allowed inside. T&Hs Grafton I find very nice and lets be honest is there anything more manly than Old Spice?

Just sniff test and buy what you like. If they won't let you smell it go elsewhere. Fragrance is personal.

To me Mr Taylor is about as about as masculine as they come. But masculine is subjective. I also like Musgo Real as a masculine sent, they have bar soap (i use most days), as well as O Melhor.

I'm a big bay rum fan. It's a traditional barber shop smell. My wife likes the bay rum smell a lot, and finds it manly. Ogallala makes a line of inexpensive bay rum soap in pucks and sticks. Nice, slick lather. Nice smell. Gets my vote.

The two scents I most associate in my own mind as "male territory" smells are Clubman aftershave and Bay Rum, but there's not been a cream or soap in the fixed-income, limited budget price zone, that I've personally owned, that had a matching scent. I like whatever scent that Cella has ("almond", perhaps) -- it smells "male" to me.

Thanks. Looks like a thumbs up for Malborough, Bay Rum and Tabac. I don't think I can get the Bay rum. They have the Malborough, and the tabac should be easy enough to find elsewhere.

Cheers.

i dont know about masculine, but i was checking out some soaps yesterday and came across aramis shaving soap, now i was trying think of what the smell reminded me of, i think it was the stench of the drunks in some of the rougher pubs in my area, realy woefull smell, it might be a slick shaver but the smell, on a lighter note erasmic shaving soap has a nice clean old school smell.

Just discovered that both Trumper and Taylor have some Bay Rum products. Thanks again.
Hej tacchini, I remember Aramis! You're going back a few years there.

I just used MW Cedar and Sage a couple times over the weekend. I thought that was pretty woodsy/manly. I think I'll use that before I depart to go camping next week!

I'm a big fan of Mama Bear Soaps. She has Aged Spice (Old Spice type scent), bay rum, and one she calls Ye Olde Barber Shoppe. I haven't tried the last of those, yet, but it gets a lot of love around here.

the aramis after shave was not too bad in the 80s, thats why when i saw the shaving soap at £15 for 2 pucks i thought thats not bad, got one out of the box to have a whif , it was not like the aftershave, a brutal smelling soap.

Portman square, Notting hill I never see mentioned and I think it's a really nice masculine scent, works great too! I guess it is all subjective though.
