What's new

recent ebay buy

so i was recently watching a lillicraps hone on ebay (it was talked about on here) but mnaged to miss it so i ended up just searching through ebay for another and found an auction just called "antique razors" i checked it out of interest and ended up being the only bidder and winning it for £10 including postage (less than the last hone went for) heres what it contained.

the new is not complete and the ever ready box is a little damaged but the hone doesnt appear to have any chips.

Despite what the box says, your "New" is not a New. Is it labelled Gillette? It's clearly a traveller's razor, with the two-part handle. What makes it incomplete? Honestly, it looks like a German made razor. Are there two of them?

I was looking at that one too... but my internet died. Anyway, all I wanted was the hone anyway.
Nice one mate, enjoy.

Yep, definitely a mismatch on the new. The box is a "new" box, but the razor is an Old Type w/ a travel handle added on. Possibly a franken-razor. (I don't know if the old types came with a travel handle option or not.)

In any case, a nice haul.

yeah the new is just a case and a blade box, i think the head is two parts from different razors and the handle is just an old handle from something else aswell (not a two piece as i also originaly thought). i too am only really interested in the hone but the extras are a bonus.

the hone seems to work pretty good on some of the old blades i still use, havent tried it on any new blades yet although im not sure it will actually sharpen them, may be of use to smooth them out in a similar way to corking though.

hey aquilla, its worth getting a black light bulb just to watch that thing glow.

we have some nuclear glass and its looks great...

No good can come of this. I can see using the hone on a dull blade, but I can only image that you'll somehow conflict with the existing bevel on a new one.

yeah id guess so too but for the few pence of blade and few ml of blood ill still give it a go :closedeye

I have one of these little german travel razors. They were made under different names, and I think Merkur still makes them. Mine does have an old style head. The guard is marked Gillette. The case is stamped Germany. I have seen the same razor marked Hoffritz.
