re-plating a razor.who does a solid job?

For those that have has razors re-plated.... who did you use and what was turnaround time, quality of work and cost?

Krona kruiser who is an outstanding B&B'er. He only does nickel but his work is smashing.
Then there is....
"Restored Razors in England would be a good choice. Dave (posts on B&B as onotoman) is very well-regarded in both his razor knowledge and replating skills."

I agree to the above statement on Dave. His work has been nothing short of spectacular.

Finally....

Heard nothing but good things about them however you will have to be patient in getting them back. Count on a month which to me isn't a big deal as I never knew the razor existed for all this time so a month isn't going to kill me.

That's it. Stay away from Razor emporium. They have been banned from several forums for good reason. Other than that

+1 to all of the above.
A note on Reliable whom I have not actually used but inquired about replating a razor - I inquired about a Barbasol Floating Head and a few Gillettes and SEs I wanted replated. They informed me that they only re-plate Gillettes. Other than that (and waiting a few days for a response) they were very professional and courteous in their correspondence. I would not hesitate to use them. Nor would I hesitate to use Dave and or Sam (Krona Kruiser) - both are upstanding members and well respected for the work they do.
Search the forum for threads on Razor Emporium so you are informed before you make a decision to go with them.

I've only dealt with them twice, and after reading the crap they've put their customers through, I'll never do business with them again. The stuff they've tried to get away with, and the stuff they have gotten away with is disgusting. Swapping out customer's razors and giving them back different ones, selling customer's re-plate orders to other people. It makes me sick.

I'm getting a Fatboy shipped from Australia & it'll be going straight to Dave at http://www.restoredrazors.com
I'll do a before & after thread for it.
Here are a couple of pics from Mark, the chap who sold it to me (2nd from L)

+1 for Dave (Onotoman) at Restoredrazors.

I have three beautiful Gillette Aristocrats that he replated for me, one in nickel and two in rhodium. And I currently have a razor out to him that may be a very tricky replate. If he pulls it off, I will have to start a thread to brag on him. Tricky because the razor is not made of brass, and the process to remove the old chrome could wreck the razor.

And this may be why Reliable will only replate Gillettes. The head on the Barbasol floating head razor is a chrome plated zinc alloy, or "pot metal," I'm told.

+1 for Dave (Onotoman). He did a superb job on my President. It looks like new. If I can pry myself away from it, he will do my Eclipse Red Ring. I would not use anyone else.

Reliable will only plate razors where the base metal is brass. They use a technology that can't put a plating on pot metals. And they cannot plate chromium. And they do an excellent job.

+3 for Dave (Onotoman). He replated a Slim, Fat Boy, & 40's SS for me last summer--outstanding work. Turn-around from U.S. was about 4 weeks total.

Many thanks for the support guys :)

That Fatboy looks like an ideal candidate.

I've just acquired a new 'Precious Metals Plating Machine' and the results for Gold, Silver and Rhodium are really outstanding - Quite an investment but well worth it, going by early results.

I'm also having my garage lab completely re-modelled and re-equipped in September at a cost of around £6,000 GBP - this hobby of mine is getting expensive, but come winter, it'll be a lot more pleasurable working in the new shop.

Best wishes

Dave

For those that have sent out razors to Dave - What is your preferred/recommended shipping method? I don't do a ton of shipping overseas so I may inadvertently go overboard and get hit with a ridiculous cost - or I may not ship with enough protection.

Dave - Thanks again for the services that you provide to B&B. Definitely feel free to comment as well. Also, can you post/provide a picture of a few razors that you have replated in gold and rose-gold?

No problem,

Most of the guys send by airmail small packet signature required (which costs around $10 I believe)

I haven't any Rose Gold photos as yet but there are some gold examples on my blog here:

Best wishes
