Razors

Hi,

I'm new to this board and a noob when it comes to good shaving tools. I currently use a Gillette fusion razor and want to switch to a better razor. What's the difference between double edge, safety and straight razors? Also I briefly did some searching and found that you can get DE sample blades, how do you use these blades (what do they get attached to?)?

I bought a s*** load of Proraso products today and hope to put them to use once I get good shaving tools.

So would a sample pack go on one of these razor holders? If so what is a good razor blade holder (or whatever it's called?)?

A razor blade sample pack is a few different brands of razor blades all together. Some website sell their own or you can make your own. The idea is to try different type of blades as we all have different tastes.

You are correct, the blades will go in a Safety Razor.

Yes, or simply call them razors and blades. If you are comfortable with a vintage razor you can pick up a Tech or Super Speed on the B/S/T forum here. If you want a new razor, the Merkur 45 or Edwin Jagger / Muehle 89 might suit you.

I was thinking of getting the Merkur Heavy Classic/HD. Any cons? Also with this razor can I try any sample blade from other brands on it?

In general any DE blade will fit any DE razor. There are some exceptions, but they are historical curiosities that you aren't likely to find unless you look for them.

The Merkur 34c is a good razor: it's what I started with, and I still have it. But if I were starting again I would also consider a Merkur 45 or a Muehle / Edwin Jagger 89 series among new razors, or a Tech, Super Speed, or Krona for vintage razors.

Welcome to B&B! This is a great place where you can find out everything you want to know about wetshaving.

I just started last month and I can't tell you how much I enjoy shaving or how much closer my shave is each day.

I bought the Merkur HD, but I ordered the Barber Pole version, which has a longer, heavier handle. I like it very much and use it almost every day.
Since that time, I have also acquired a Schick Krona and a Gillette Flair Tip. They are both very affordable and will also give you a great shave.

The BST section on this forum is very active. New razors show up all the time throughout the day, so it's easy to find an affordable razor that will get you started right away!

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone! I'll invest in a few razors and a few blades and let you know how it goes.

Blades are cheap, but a few razors? At $30-50+ each for new ones, that's an unnecessary outlay. Even buying vintage, too many toys will retard the learning process, and it is something that will take a month or two of practice to get handy at.

Pick one and start to learn, you'll gauge your preferences when you know what you do or don't like about it.

While deciding about a DE razor or waiting for one to arrive, time is well spent working on pre-shave face preparation and lathering with a brush. This makes a dramatic difference even with the cartridge razor you are currently using.

Welcome to the good ship B&B. Take a stroll on the promenade deck and enjoy the voyage. :thumbup1:

Always remember, relax but be vigilant when you shave!

+1! First, learn to shave properly, then start playing around with the shiny new toys! :001_tongu
