Razor preference: vintage or new?

New. I tried most vintage gillette and schick... None of them hold a candle to q Merkur Futur or HD for me. I do have one vintage Hoffritz slant... But, that is still a Merkur.

When I first began with DE blades, I started out using a Merkur 23c. But I love the historic aspect of vintage Gillettes, and I was born in the year 1958 so I have tried a 58 flaretip, a 58 TV special, a 58 tech, and for kicks I also tried a couple Gillette News, one with a beautiful Bull Mastiff handle. I am glad I had a chance to try them, but to tell you the truth, I really could not find anything that shaved me better than my Merkur 23c, so thats my only razor now.

the 23c was my first as well. It is an excellent razor and part of my Merkur only stable of DE's.

I enjoy the history, nostalgia and the fact the the Gillettes have lasted all these years, but at this point I'd have to say that I prefer new razors. Based on the limited amount of both that I've owned.

Well, you have convinced me to get a vintage DE. Any suggestions? Right now I am using a Mach 3. I bought it last year and I am happy with it. It is a lot better than my Autra. Those are the only two razor I have owned.

I love both vintage, and to a lesser extent new.

In vintage, I have several Gillette's, Gems, and an Injector.

In terms of new, I have a Muhle R89 (one of the best razors available), and a Lord Merkur Tech (the newer style Lord razor with a Merkur like head).

I briefly had a Merkur 38R that I sold when I discovered vintage Gillette's blew it out of the water.

I have also owned a Weishi (so mild that I found it 100% useless), and two Ming Shi (the first one shaved perfectly, the second had finish issues that caused a rough shave).

Do the re-plated Gillette heads paired with a Bull Mastiff XL handle count as new or vintage?? :001_tt2:

My favorite razors are vintage, but it's not the fact of their being vintage that makes them favorites, I just like them better as razors. In the case of injectors and single edge razors, there are no options for new, it's vintage or nothing. For double edge, it happens that I like the shave from my New Gillette and Fatboy better than my Merkurs. I've called a halt to additional razor acquisition for now, but I expect that almost all of my shaving for this year will be done with vintage razors.

I have two vintage Techs, have yet to shave with a new DE. Have to say it adds a lot of character when your razor comes in a beaten up old leather case that's lined with blue velvet :D
