Rank blades in term of sharpness!

While this may be quite subjective, I was wondering if we could put together a list in order of "sharpest" to "least sharp" blades. I have tried searching and not found this in any threads! This may help people to choose which blades may be more effective for them- I tend to love feathers, and hate red pack isreali's and other less sharp blades. List from sharpest to least sharp from your experience! Feathers, Astras, Iridiums, Derby, IP.........

This is a very subjective topic, but most seem to rank (and my experience agrees with) feathers as the sharpest, followed by astra & iridium, IP, then derby. but, ymmv.

+1 on being very subjective.

I do agree that Feathers are sharpest, and Iridium just became one of my preferred blades as well. I have still yet to try Astra's or Israeli Personna's (IP), but I have some and will try this next week. I keep going back to what I like... Feathers. So far, when I do buy bulk, I know that Feathers and Iridium's will be part of that order.

The official answer is
  1. Anything I sharpen
  2. Anything else

Just kidding. (Mind you, some people would say that and not be kidding.) The sharpest blades I've encountered are the Feathers made for their Artist series.

For me, it's always about a balance of sharpness and smoothness. Feathers may be the sharpest, but those almost as sharp Swedish Gillettes are my ideal.

I am going to try to do that in my thread "Feather, measure of all blades". Have to test a few more blades, then I will be compiling the list.

awesome! I have read through your large and comprehensive post already looking for that exact answer! I will be looking forward to it!

Sharpness is only part of the equation for determining the best blade for an individual. I have compiled notes on a number of blades I have used and have indicated a general ranking of sharpness for them. However, the sharpest blades do necessarily give me the best shave, best meaning close, comfortable and irritation free.

Feather- Sharpest just be careful on your head. If you make a mistake, YOU'RE GONNA BLEED PROFUSELY!

Red Pack Personnas-Next in line for me, my blade of choice.

Crystals- Seem to be hit or miss for me. One time they work, the next time I look like I went 10 rounds with the cheese grater and lost.

Astras- OK for heads, legs, arms and back. I can't seem to get them to work anywhere else.

Derbys- You might as well shave with a bowling ball in my opinion. Dull, miserable and wretched about sums up these.

I'll report back when I try others, tonight will be 7 O'Clocks.

+4 (I think)...

A sharp blade for me might be dull for you...

Another vote for Feathers being the sharpest, but my face can't handle a Feather every day. I feel that Astra SP is just a rung down from Feathers in terms of sharpness, but they are very kind to my face. Seems to me that Crystals are a bit sharper than the Red IP. Derby also seems to live in that niche, hovering somewhere around Reds.

I have some Iridiums that I am really looking forward to trying.

These are near Feathers in sharpness and smoother, IMO. I agree with your above observations. Astra is a good blade. Bic is another surprisingly smooth blade that I wuld put in the Astra camp. Derbys below all of these. Haven't opened my Lords yet. Treet SP down there with Dorcos, IMHO.

For me smoothness is more important than sharpness. If a blade is dull I can change it. If the edge is rough it has to be hand stropped or corked before I will use it. I do find that Feathers and Gillettes 7 o'clocks in the yellow box to be sufficient for my needs.

I've taken the time and effort to capture my thoughts on a number of blades that I have used for the last while. I've only included blades that can be still purchased new through vendors and it's a ranking based on my perception of sharpness and not my preferences for shaving. Using my notes, I rank the sharpness (from highest to lowest) of the razor blades I have tried as follows:

- Feathers
- Iridium Super Extra
- Bleue Extra (NOS)
- KAI
- Blue Birds
- 7 O'Clock SharpEdge
- Treet Platinum
- Shark
- Astra Superior Stainless
- 7 O'Clock Super Stainless
- Derby Extra (Horizontal)
- Astra Superior Platinum
- Super+ Platinum
- Gillette 365
- Personna (Red Pack)
- Treet Dura Sharp
- Dorco ST-301
- Merkur Super
- Dorco ST-300

Note: I consider almost all of these blades serviceable. In a number of cases, I ranked the smoother blade higher if I deem the blades to be equally sharp. For example, it was my opinion that Shark blades and Treet Platinums to be virtually equal in sharpness. However, I thought the Treet blades to be slightly smoother, thus I ranked them higher. Nonetheless, both are excellent blades. Most of the middle tier blades are quite close in terms of sharpness.

Thanks for the input! I am placing an order for a pack of iridiums, astra SP's, and yellow pack 7o clocks. I will see if any can compare to the feathers!

seems hit,or miss with most people you either hate them(class I'm in),or love them they seem very inconsistent though getting dud packs etc. I just tried my 1st astra platinum yesterday I think it might be my go to blade sharper and smoother than any derby I've ever used.
I do care more about smoothness way more than sharpness sharks are a little too sharp for me,but still ok so I'm scared of trying sharper blades like feathers unless they are smoother?

seems very few or almost none here favor Derbys .

am i right ??
