What's new

random sign in san francisco

Saw this walking down the street in San Fran. Thought it was related to the soap, but alas it was a false alarm. I think it's above an old French restaurant, maybe they sell tobacco...

I've seen that myself in SF, that's pretty funny...yeah, it's a French restaurant, great French Onion soup. That tagger's artwork on the roof above is new since the last time I was there though, lol...

It's a standard French sign you'll find on tobacconists in France. They've obviously got a hold of one from somewhere as a decoration.

All shops/cafes that are licensed to sell tobacco products have to have that sign by law. It has to say TABAC and it has to be that shape!

Funny, I pass by this sign all the time, it's a couple blocks from my office and never noticed it until now.

That's a pretty hefty commute from Los Gatos! Is The Cats restaurant still in business? I grew up in San Jose/Campbell, and haven't been in Los Gatos (or taken Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz) in ages.

I was watching an old French film recently (can't remember which it was though...I went through an Existentialist/French New Wave kick, so it could have been The 400 Blows, Battle of Algiers, Le Petit Soldat, or Army of Shadows) and saw it in that too...made me laugh. My wife thinks we're all nuts.

I spent 1974-1976 living in Boulder Creek (just off 236 half way to Big Basin). Hwy 17 was quite familiar to me. As was Los Gatos. Ate a number of times in The Cats. Been to the Los Gatos Wine Festival. I might still have the glass.

Is it in North Beach? Looks vaguely familiar...but the years are passing.

Of course, as soon as you ask me I can't remember which specific street it's on, but it's on one of the side streets off Union Square towards the Financial District. I'm sure it's on Google Street View somewhere but I can't find it right now.

The haul from LG to the city isn't that bad. We've only been on the West Coast a few months, and our apartment is definitely a short term situation. My wife works in Cupertino, so we're looking at moving somewhere mid-Peninsula, but I'm in the market for a new job and she will be by mid-summer as well so it's probably best not to move until we know where we're going to end up working. Two moves in one year is enough, there's no need to potentially add a third!
