What's new

Quietest refrigerators?

Basic...no gizmos or electronic doodads.
White.
No ice-maker.
No water dispenser.
15-20 feet.
Available in North America.
$1500 max...but under $1000 better.
Freestanding.
QUIET RUNNING

There has been so much company fusions in the appliance world in the past 20 years its hard to know who builds what anymore.

So is there a brand out there today reputed for being quieter than another?

I don't know if its helpful, I had a Whirlpool. It was NOT quiet. I now have a Jenn Air (also made by Whirlpool). Its NOT what I would term quiet. Whirlpool owns Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, JennAir and maybe one or two more. Those I would avoid.

I'll ask my son. He was appliance manager for 4 years at a retail chain. He'll know about quiet. I'll post later what he says.

I have a big basic white that must be quiet because I haven't thought about it until I read your question. It just says Maytag Performa on the door. About 7 or 8 years old but I am sure I have seen it in best buy and lowes recently

Does Miele make a refrigerator? I'm guessing it would be out of the price range.

Sounds like you need an old fashion Ice Box.

If you can set the fridge back in a recess instead of sitting out in the room, that will cut down on the noise significantly. Maybe build a pantry on one side and a set of cabinets on the other?

My son responded. Says LG. I'm sure LG won't be the least cost brand. It may be a case of you get what you pay for. I know Miele vaccuums command a premium price.

Anyway, here's a link he sent as well. http://m.homedepot.com/p/LG-Electro...ator-in-Platinum-Finish-LTN16385PL/203744080/

Hope this helps. And, again. I would NOT buy a Whirlpool family brand again. The only reason we bought the JennAir was because it was the most afforable cabinet depth fridge. LG, Samsung, Electrolux were beyond our budget.

Good luck.

I have an Electrolux, three years old now, and this is the quietest fridge I have ever seen.

The model I have does not meet your other criteria since it is stainless and it does have water/ice. The ice machine is awesome (I was reluctant for years to have water and ice on a fridge and what a fool I was...) but you can hear ice cubes falling in the tank.

If you want a basic fridge, won't just getting it without an ice maker make it quiet? The only thing I ever hear on fridges these days is either the ice dropping or the defrost setting kicking in.

Thanks for all the comments guys...even the Wisenheimers :001_tt2:

Special thanks to MaxP for all the effort, I will be checking that one out.

Not necessarily, my neighbor has a GE fridge like the one in the video below:

Please keep the suggestions coming.

I think you will have a hard time figuring out what models are really quiet or not. I went shopping for a new frig a couple of years ago and QUIET was at top of the list, but was hard pressed to find any factual data about noise levels. You might find some comment in a review or visit your neighbor's house, but solid information is hard to come by. There were a few really expensive makes that would publish claims that seemed plausible, but good luck finding any information about the models sitting in a big box store or big merchandise store.

I believe there is correlation between energy used and noise, as obviously they don't make noise when they aren't running. So better insulation and higher energy efficiency should help minimize the noise. I got a Kenmore Elite and have been mostly happy with it. I wish it were even quieter, but I like it compared to what it replaced.
