Question about Morton's Steak House

Obviously I realize Morton's is a chain and results will vary from location, however I am taking SWMBO there for Valentines Day and then to Cirque du Soleil.

I am curious, what can I expect to spend on dinner for 2? (figuring we each get a drink, entree, side, and a desert). I am sure again it will vary, but I am just trying to get an idea so I don't have a heart attack when the bill comes.

Also, is Morton's good? I've always wanted to eat there, but never bothered.

Sounds like SWMBO will have an excellent Valentine's Day!

As for Morton's, they have great steaks, but they are pricey. The charge depends on the cut of meat with Filet being the most expensive. Sides are not included and are charged separately, but they are plenty big enough to share. So are the desserts. You don't mention alcoholic drinks or just tea, coke, water, etc. I would make a guesstimate of dinner for 2 including tip somewhere in the range of $130.00 to $200.00 depending on choices. Here's their website for your area.

Thank you Tim!

I went to their site and it had a coupon for 2 dinners (3 courses) for $99. Is it tacky to use that for Valentines Day dinner? I already spend $250 on show tickets!

Use the coupon! If it was first date I might reconsider but hey....thats still a chunk of $$$. I was not impressed with the steak at Mortons but I also dont approve of alot of chain restaurants, even the higher end ones. I think Ruth Chris is a joke but thats personal opinion. the service at Mortons was incredible though!

Unless one finds a restaurant that serves Kobe Beef and one can afford it, I've yet to find one that can cook any steak at least as well as I can at home. However, The Capital Grille comes close. Morton's is a slight step below that IMO.

I agree. As one waiter put it: "Anything tastes good with butter on it." The very smell of all the butter makes me sick. Plus, the fact that Ruth's Chris is usually filled with first dates and prom dates while Morton's is filled with businessmen, actors, and musicians (at least the one in Beverly Hills) tells you something.

Again, it's all about choices. The 2 dinners for $99 gets you the smallest filet they have along with a salad, shared vegetable, and shared dessert. This does not include drinks. Be aware of up-selling. For example, you order water to save some money, and they ask, "Tap or bottled". It is Valentines, and you don't want to sound completely cheap, so you respond, "Bottled". Be aware that bottled means them charging you $8.00 for San Pellegrino which sells for less that $2.00 in most grocery stores. If you order a vodka mixed drink, and they say, "Grey Goose", you've just tacked an extra $5.00 onto the cost of that drink. When they say you can add a bottle of wine to your meal for $39.00, that means a 1/2 liter (16.91 oz) bottle. What you're paying for is the service, ambiance, and atmosphere. Your best bet is to order the steak you really want and share a vegetable and dessert. For mixed drinks, stick with the house brand. If each of you is only drinking one glass of wine, just order by the glass.

Armed with this information, you can be informed and concentrate on impressing your lady and having a good time without breaking the bank. Oh, and make reservations RIGHT NOW!

I hope you have fun, but I've never spent less than $200 or so for two people. Everything is A la carte and although the steaks are good, I think better values are easy to find. It adds up fast!

Mortons is a chain, meaning you're going to get a consistently good by not necessarily great meal. Service will be attentive and helpful, and if there's the slightest hiccup bring it to the attention of the manager and he/she will more than take care of you.

But you're going to be in a room designed by a corporate committee, eating from a menu designed to be as innocuous as possible. And you'll pay well for it.

Depends what you're looking for, sometimes you want to roll the dice at a small local bistro and sometimes you want to get a guaranteed good time at a chain. Personally, knowing San Jose's food choices, I'd go with the chain :)

Is Morton's pretty slow? We have reservations for 5:30 and the show starts at 8. We are only a few blocks from the show.

IMHO going out on a holiday like this or Mother's Day is a mistake. The restaurants are busier than usual and service suffers.

I would guess around $150. I've never been to one, either, but I am guessing it is in the same range as Ruth's Chris.

Mortons is fine. I can get out usually for 130 or so with drinks. But for my money I like to stick to the Cameron Mitchell restaurants for "chains." Better than Mortons or Ruths Chris IMO.

It's just a chain, albeit a very expensive one. I've been in Morton's in Las Vegas, LA, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Denver, Boca Raton and maybe Miami .. but only the first one was on my hook, always after as a guest. If you desire cookie cutter sameness, ala the House of Clown, just the ticket. Want something memorable & unique, they aren't it ..

So, no risk, you will get approximately the same menu everywhere, quality is slightly above average but prices are to the moon, justified by some for the enormous portions .. I'd say $200 for two with just a couple drinks . .
