Question about DE handles

I was trying to ID a DE I found at a local resale shop, but knew not much of DE's so I didn't buy it. It was a little worn, but nothing terrible, a twist top not with the flaps that go up, and it didn't have that "comb" look where the blade is held. The top of the blade holder was smooth without any markings, and the ones on the underside were worn so it was hard to tell what they said. I am inclined to think it was an older Gillette or maybe a worn Merkur. For $18, is it worth the buy just to have a first DE?

Also, it had a hole on the bottom of the handle like this razor (from hutchster ): $641647302_o.jpg

What is that hole on the bottom for? Is that telling of what kind of razor it is, or do many manufacturers do it? That is part of what turned me off, because I thought it missing a part (no case or anything). I suppose I should have looked for threading but didn't do so. I should also mentino the handle seemed relatively short for me, at the time I didn't realize that's just how some came.

Thanks!

I'm going to venture that you have a gold-plated Aristocrat- very nice for $18. I believe that's a 50s-60s model, but you can confirm by looking for the letter/number date-code, on the underside of the head. Ya done good, I'd say!

The pictured was just an example of the hole in the bottom of the handle and a question as to its purpose! I wish I got that for $18.

It did NOT look like the one pictured, and I've been rummaging through pictures all over B&B to find one just like it but am failing hardcore. I might just try to stop by there friday and grab a picture or two of it. I suppose any decent quality razor for $18 isn't terrible, but I just spent a lot on straights and am wary of spending more $$, but I know I should try a DE...

I suppose it could help to say it was 3 piece as well. I'm currently searching through mr-razor to see if it is one of those. will update this post with any findings...

Ya'll think $18 is fair for a decent shape razor? What are things I can look out for, as it seemed pretty simple of a thing.

If you say it's a three piece does it have a comb as it may be a old type or new with a blas end handle with the ball missing

I don't think it had a comb (which is referring to the nobs on the base plate correct?). I'm not sure it had a ball missing, as the way the etching on the handle was made me want to twist the bottom, so I know there was that line near the bottom without etching and then starting etching again. Not sure if this makes any sense lol. I looked through EVERY razor on mr-razor and didn't find it, and I would say the top was similar to this:

$1326-hobel.jpg

Completely smooth on top, and no "combs".

@alex - i've scoured for a couple hours trying to find it... I should just buy the damn thing lol. Problem is place closes at ~6 and I get back from work around 5:30-6 depending on traffic so it's tough to get there for me.

Could it be a Merkur Classic?

I'd say it looked pretty similar to the gillette tech? on the right of this image in this post:

But the handle was a little different... but if that's $9 maybe $18 is too much LOL.. maybe it is a franken razor with mismatching head and handle, handle looks more like some gillette techs.

My second guess would have been a single or double ring gillette but not if its a guard bar there were many company's that made de razors it could be a diffrent brand it's anybody's guess without a picture of it all depends it could be worth 5 dollars or a hundred
