Puma Solingen

I collected a number of razors however they were forgotten about for a few decades in sub optimal conditions. Is this one worth saving as a start back into straight shaving? The guilding is long gone.

The scales on at least the middle one in the group shot HAVE to go. They are off gassing, have damaged that blade, and will hurt the others. Cel rot is contagious. Quarantine that razor, and bin the scales.

They are all good razors.

Good feedback and appreciated. In my mind the modern ledandy is perhaps worth saving? Not too bothered about the aesthetics (thankfully) but I would like something to get me started.

Unless they were honed and then strop, it should be ok. If not, you should be able to find someone to hone one or all. I would start with one and see how it goes after that.

What is it that you see that tells you that. I've got a lot to learn and would appreciate pointers.
See the even coating of rust on the blade of the middle razor, that corresponds to the places where the scales cover or are in contact with the steel. That is the tell tail sign of cellrot.

Compare that to the Gota 120 above it, which has rust in the opposite way, on the spine but not the face of the blade. That indicates that it was probably stored next to the affected razor. The fumes from the bad scales were able to get to the spine of the Gota, but its own scales protected the blade somewhat.

The dangerous part is the chemical reaction that happens when celluloid starts to break down on one item can trigger the problem in other items stored nearby. In museums when this happens the affected item will be immediately quarantined in a vault away from other items to prevent contamination. There is no fixing it, those scales need to go, and cross your fingers and watch the other razors like a hawk.

I'm UK based can anybody point me in the right direction for some assistance please?

Have a look at the wiki page to have a straight razor sharpened

A master of crafts based in the UK would be incredible. I think let's start the craft again.

All of the razor can be saved except the Fromm, it is too far gone and as said a danger to any metal stored near them. I doubt the steel would hold an edge. The only thing salvageable are the bolsters. Remove it from the other immediately.

The others will clean up easily with a liberal coating of WD40 and 0000 steel wool. 0000 steel wool wrapped around a wooden coffee stir stick will clean between the scales. Then polish with clean 0000 steel wool and any good metal polish. And final polish with metal polish and paper towels.

Be careful with steel wool and metal polish around any gold. Both will remove the gold.

I would segregate and keep an eye on the Gotta, that fine rust pattern may be off gassing, or it may be from the Fromm. Either way, clean it and watch for the return of any fine rust. If it does, it may have to go.

Nice stable of razors, all potential shaver. Nice French point Double Duck Goldedge.
