Puck Holders

thinking of going the safety razor route with a soap cake or "puck" - many are shown inside a wooden holder - question: doesn't the wood get mildewy or rotted out after awhile - they look good but are they practical ?

Buy the refill puck without the wooden bowls. The wooden bowls are near useless, except for looking pretty on your counter-top. You can't possibly generate lather inside of the bowl, and most of them are rather shallow, making even the loading of soap to the brush a messy affair.

You can buy the refill puck, and put it in your favorite mug/bowl, like a nice vintage Old Spice Mug.

Use the money you save on not buying pretty bowls for more important things, like more shaving cream/ soap, or more razors. :thumbup1:

I house most of my soaps in wooden bowls and I think they work great - also looks great on the shelf. I face lather, so just loading the brush in the bowl and going to the face works just fine.

I am a big fan of the Marvy Rubber Shaving Mug. Its nice to have something that won't break if it drops in a tile bathroom. That is the idea behind the wooden bowl but they can get very funky.

im a sucker for the pretty bowls. So long as they dont sit in water then they'll be fine. I just wipe off any lather that has strayed onto the wood and leave it all to dry with the lid off for a few hours before putting it away.

+1, but I only have one of my soaps in a wooden bowl, and it (soap and bowl) is getting voted off the island as soon as I'm home in December to put it on the b/s/t.

I kind of agree with you. even though they have probably been made to withstand some contact with water--I highly doubt the manufacturer would overlook that--it still seems like they could start to get a little funky given enough time. that, and the shallowness keeps me from going for the good looking wooden bowl.

I was a sucker for the pretty bowl initally, but I find them a pain in the rear end to use though. I ended up putting the puck in a Anchor Hocking bowl with a lid.

I have a wooden C&E bowl that I have been using for almost three years now. It shows a little bit of finish wear on the edges but is otherwise just fine. No mold, rot, or funkiness about it. While it is not designed for generating lather in, I have no trouble loading up my brush from it.

Shoot, there is less room in the Tabac bowl for loading up a brush. And the Proraso soap in the plastic tub? That's loaded to the top! It all just goes to show you that the intended use for those soaps is face lathering.

I like the wood bowls, but the stain is coming off of them before you finish the puck 90% of the time. I wiped the edge of my C&E bowl last night and there was dark marks left on the towel afterwards, or when you reach the last little piece, your lather will have a brown tint.

This is exactly what I did when I bought Trumper's Lime. I bought the refill as I couldn't see any use for the expensive wooden bowl.

I then put the puck in an empty Wilkinson Sword Blue plastic bowl. (that should upset the purists:biggrin1:)

That was the tin I was looking at too. I'm thinking buy a favorite puck of soap, melt it into the tin, and you have yourself some traveling soap.

Actually, if you wanted to go REALLY portable and prefer your soap in stick form, you could use one of these bad boys:

On that note, how do you guys melt your soaps into mugs and what not?

Do not melt tallow based soaps. For the glycerin ones, heat in the microwave in about 10 second pulses. I think my puck of col conk took maybe 30 seconds.

When the finish starts to come off - get some Spray-On Aquatic Varathane, or something similar. You can even do that when you first receive the bowl.
