Pu-erh gift ?

I friend likes Pu-erh and I would like to gift her a cake.

Where to start? I'd like to impress her with something without breaking the bank.

Ideas ?

I recently got the sampler for the JK Teas Pu-erhs from Jas-e, and I really liked them. $40-60 for a beeng.

pu'er has a wide range of variety. Like wine or whiskey, buying it for someone else can be tricky, especially if you don't know what they like. It might also help if you defined the budget a little better.

If you do not actually know your friend's taste in pu-erh, sampler packages are a great way to go. The JK Tea Factory sampler (containing six teas) is one of my all time favorites and is reasonably priced.

Samplers are just fun too. If you want a full beeng from the JK Tea selection, I really liked the Lagu Leisure and 2009 Jinggu Mountain. The Jinggu Mountain is a great value in my humble opinion.

If you don't want to go to the sample route, you could get a few smaller cakes or tuos, like 100g-200g and box them together.

I would also try to guess a bit about their taste. If they like scotch, maybe raw bulang. If they like sweets, maybe ripe puer. It is a gamble though, samples are probably a safer bet.

Pu'ers are especially tricky territory, but usually something vintage (5+ years old) can be purchased for $20 or so and brews up well. Make sure what your getting is from a reputable dealer. I go to a local shop that always has good tea at reasonable prices. You might check out their website for some ideas. www.teahousekuanyin.com

Pu'er makes a great gift because it already comes packaged. It's always a thrill to unwrap a new bing.

If she enjoys pu'er, she probably knows a bit about it already, so I recommend a "can't miss" bing. Try a Menghai 7532, 7542, or 85831, or any one of several nice bings (or tuos) from Xiaguan.
