Problems with T of OBS

Looking for a bit of advice.
On two separate occasions I've had my new T of OBS Sandalwood shave cream crap out on me. Like... it kinda just evaporated out of the bowl and off the brush. It just seems to go flat.
I have a suspicion it may be the pre-shave oil... but if so then only TOBS is affected, not proraso or T&H or even the other drug store brands I've got (how the hell did I end up with so many?....:confused1)
Has anyone else ever experienced this? I'm reluctant to dispense with the pre-shave oil as i find it helps a lot; I may be a little superstitious but the one time I forgot made for a horrible shave so it's now a part of the ritual.

I can honestly say that I have had no problems whatsoever with TOBS creams. They always lather and perform perfectly for me.

My first inclination would be to say that you're not lathering right, but you're hardly a newbie and you could lather TOBS while simultaneously drunk and high. So I have no idea what it could be. :confused1

The two reasons I have seen lather disappear in the way you describe are...

Sitting too long and it drying out into a very thin almost bubbly foam.

Being too hot which also breaks it down into the same as one.

If you're doing the same with other creams without the same issue, what is the consistency of the cream?

I was having the same issue, I also use pre shave oil, and the problem was that I was using too much PSO. A little really does go a long way. I have since begun using one 3-5 drops at most and I have not had a problem since.

Ah Ha! Too hot. That could be it. I have a scuttle (well, O.K. it's homemade) and I pre-heat it and then top it up with hot water before lathering (and I keep the hot water heater maxed so it's something like 150Deg F.)
I'll try forgoing the super hot water next time.
I guess this might be a case of too much of a good thing.
Thanks.

150 is probably the issue. My hottest tap is almost too much.

So does this mean that your other creams can stand higher temps without breakdown as compared to the TOBS?

I had this same problem. Everytime it happened I used really hot water to warm my lather bowl and to make the lather. I just never put it together that it was a problem with heat. Thanks for postng the question!!

Good point... I'm trying to remember if I've used my "homemade scuttle" with them. It's a fairly recent innovation (just a tupperware container that fits under my shave bowl perfectly) and my TOBS is fairly new to me as well. I did use T&H in that same setup with no problems just the time before.
It's days like this that I wish my beard would grow faster: I seem to have a lot of variables to eliminate... and not enough whiskers. I'll have to try different creams and see.

All creams will have lather break down issues if heated too much. Some withstand heat better than others. The fatty European drugstore creams that are loaded with coconut oil can probably stand a bit more heat I'm guessing. Too much PSO can also kill the lather.

Be sure to let us know what works. I have never used a pre shave oil, just don't seem to be having trouble without it, but I am interested in a scuttle.
