Problem with DE razor blades

Hi everyone,

Recently I tried the Lord Super razor blades and I had a great shave , so I stuck with them for a while. A couple of days ago I decided to try again my Wilkinson Sword blades and I butchered myself. Although I've heard that most people consider them to be not as sharp as others , most of the times I get cuts.

My questions are: 1) Is it my skin or am i doing something wrong ? 2) what is the difference between Lord Super and Lord Platinum, which one is sharper or more forgiving than the other and finally 3) can anyone suggest which blades they reckon could work on me since Lord Super seem to be the best so far.

I've tried Wilkinson Sword ,Bic and Lord so far .

Thanks

I just found out that there are 5 different Lord blades : Cool, Extra, SUper, Platinum , SUper chrome...anyone knows the difference?

Hi kubotta4,

I don't know the difference between these blades. I personally use Astra blade and they work great.

Given that you butchered yourself after putting in a different blade, maybe it comes from the Wilkinson blade?

I don't know much about Lord blades, but blade selection is very subjective, you should try as many as you can to find the right one for you, of course there can be the occasional dud in a pack of blades which won't help matters.

It seems to me that for some people (me included), the ones that 'aren't as sharp' are the ones that turn a face into hamburger. I had the same problem when I foolishly tried Merkur-brand blades. I looked as though I had shaved with a rusty nail.

If the Lord Supers give great shaves, then it seems as though those are the blades for you. If you think you can get better, my suggestion would be sticking within the Lord family of blades.

As for a dud in a pack, that does happen every now and then. That happened to me a couple of months ago. A Gillette Yellow showed up that was duller than a butter knife. It happens. The trick is identifying it ASAP so you use it as little as possible.

ThePatrician is spot on. Between deathly sharp blades, and dull, lies the slightly dull.
IThe Feather Hi-Stainless, with almost no pressure applied, gives me a comfortable and close shave. I've also used Derbys that tug, and pull, and they've never cut me. The ones in-between are dangerous in my opinion.

kubotta4, since this might be beyond the knowledge of most new guys, I have asked a moderator to move it to the Razor Blade subforum. You should get more answers over there...

Hey guys, this thread was moved from the Newbie forum over here because I thought you geniuses could help kubotta4 out and I really didn't have any experience with the blades he was asking about. Anyone care to lend a hand to a new guy? Thanks!!

#1 : Impossible to be certain with this information but I can't get a nice shave from most Wilkinsons either; simply not sharp enough. A duller blade is more likely to cut you because it pulls at your hairs and your skin wll 'deform' locally.

#2 : The Lord Platinums are a stainless blade but with an added coating. In theory a coating will make your blade last longer but you will have to find out for yourself. For me the Super Stainless (blue/white pack) feels both smoother and sharper than the Platinums and both give me 3 good shaves. For some reason the Platinums feel better in more aggressive razors while the Super Stainless feel good in both mild and aggressive razors.

#3 : Also hard to say but when you like Lord blades (like I do) you could stick with them for a while as they make a great number of blades. Under the Lord brand alone they have 4 types of stainless blades (Extra, Super, Classic and Cool) the Super Chromes and the Platinum Class. Other brands from Lord include Shark, Big Ben, Crown, Rainbow, Racer, Asco and Silver Star. It is uncertain whether all these brands are really different blades but I am sure that the Extra, Super, Classic, Super Chrome and Platinums from Lord are not the same (I have yet to try the Cool).
