Preserving Label

I picked this up at a flea market a few weeks ago. I want to press it into daily service but I would like to preserve the label first.

Any suggestions? I thought of spraying it with clear lacquer or placing packing tape over it then trimming the tape edges off.

I know I will only get one shot at this so I want to be careful:

I don't know if this will help but I did a quick google search for removing labels from bottles and got a few tips on removing wine bottle labels. It might be the same process. Then you could scan and print additional labels

I like the idea of clear packing tape placed over the label and then trimmed. I think that due to the age of the label too much damage could happen if you tried to get it off. You could also take it to any good frame shop and see what they could do. Good luck.

I'd love to hear some ideas on this as well, but I would think packing tape wouldn't hold up well to even occasional contact with moisture. It also tends to yellow over time.

I tried scanning the label still on the bottle but the edges of the glass hold it up away from the scanner and it didn't come out well. Also it is printed on the inside as well. If I did create a new label printed front and back I wouldn't know how to affix it to the bottle so you could read both sides. I would like to make a reproduction but I surely don't want to remove the original while it's still in such excellent condition.

I have trepidation about using the tape as I have seen old tape become brittle and yellow.

I recall a post by a fellow here who restored an old AV bottle (earlier than mine) which did not have a label. He made his own (which I copied but lost during a reformat).

Surely someone has preserved an original label before? What are your thoughts on the clear lacquer? Does anyone here remember decopage from the 70s? I wonder if that's an option? To cover the entire front face with a thick epoxy coating. The clear nail polish sounds promising.
