Pre-Shaving Oil suggestions

Anybody have suggestions a pre-shave oils that the like. I know it's subjective but I'm looking for some commenality before I purchase a few to try?

Thanks in advance

Give Shave Secret a try. I use it and, whie there's no major difference with or without it, it's cheap and available enough that either way you choose there will be few regrets.

SS is scented with clove oil, so if you have allergies/problems with that, I'd stay away, although I've never heard of anyone being allergic and the scent does not linger.

Olive oil, grape seed oil, peanut oil - whatever you have in the kitchen will work.

Art of Shaving Pre-Shave oil is thicker and doesn't run through your fingers like the latter ones do, but you have to use a tiny amount, not a lot. It smells better and I think it works somewhat better than the aforementioned oils, but as to whether it is worth paying the significantly higher price - I'm not too sure about.

Renato

The AOS is really good. I've also used CF Pre-Shave and it does a pretty good job. It's not really an oil but has the same effect.

proraso pre/post. I'm not a huge fan of the oils, not because they do a terrible job but because they make your stubble stick to the the sink. Ew.

I use grapeseed oil and find it makes a difference for me. Plain grapeseed oil doesn't have a great scent, but rubbing just a few drops into my stubble before making lather does make a difference in performance for me personally. YMMV.

I like grape seed oil as my base - quite neutral in terms of scent. Check out the wiki that Ackvil linked to for making your own. I did the 1:1 grapeseed to shea butter & like it.

I have used AOS oil before, but have come to like the DIY concoction better b/c it is thinner & I can work it in quicker & easier.

Thanks for that information. I'd have to seek out shea butter (I know nothing about it) to try your mixture.

Using the AOS oil and plain olive oil, I've found that they plainly improve the performance of the poorly performing creams that were giving me lots of nicks (Arko Regular, Dr. Lewinns).

But on the other hand, I felt they greatly reduced the glide/slippiriness of superior creams like Trumpers and AOS, so that I got the same shave from either Trumpers, AOS and Arko Regular when used in conjunction with oil. Thus I feel like I'm reducing the performance of the very good creams.

I really don't know why AOS make their pre-shave oil, when their cream is so good when used by itself.

It would be interesting to see if the shea butter improves the performance more than oil alone.
Cheers,
Renato
