pre-shave questions

Thinking of trying some kind of pre shave, hoping it will help out a little on the neck. My question, Doesn't lathering, particularly face lathering, minimize (wash away) any benefit of using a pre-shave?

A good face lather is all the pre shave I need. I haven't noticed any improvement personally from using any product as a pre shave. Many people love pre shave products, I just didn't notice any improvement.

It will wash away products, but they've already worked to soften hair etc. and the oily ones linger if you're not too vigorous in your lathering

Than you for your very helpful input.

I took at look at some of the threads you started... Inexpensive boar for cella and Astra super stainless -- blue wrapper. Both have come up scores of times before, but you got good answers. Why? Because this is a discussion forum. We discuss things.

I'm afraid I haven't had much luck with Proraso. It's not as lubricated as the others. I need one with more hydroxides to soften the beard, too.

Yup. Same here. Though, as always, YMMV.

For myself I have never found a preshave helpful. A lather before I get in the shower and leave it on while I shower seems to soften these wiry hairs I have. Wash off the lather and then relather and shave really works for me.

I've had pretty wiry hair to begin with, and now it is mostly grey, which makes it even tougher.
Never had good results with pre-shave balms, oils, etc - but YMMV.

I shower before I shave and lather up my face with the soap I use in the shower first, and rinse my face last before I get out of the shower to shave.

That has served me very well as a pre-shave treatment.

A pre-shave oil, be it a commercial one or just plain olive oil from the kitchen, won't wash off from lathering. You'll notice the difference the second you shave - it improves sub-average soaps and creams (better cushioning, less nicks), and lowers the performance of some premium slippery creams ( they're no longer as slippery and gliding is lessened).

Renato

I haven't noticed that lathering removes any pre-shave oil.

I've had an off an on relationship with pre-shave oil. This week, it's on. For me, the pre-shave oil doesn't replace my general face prep (shower and 3-4 minutes of face lathering), nor does it alone make up for bad face prep. My shave doesn't necessarily feel any smoother with pre-shave oil, but it appears to help in the reduction of the post-shave redness that I sometimes get on my neck.

Thanks! I have searched and found multiple threads about pre-shave products and procedures, but nothing directly answering my question. There is definitely a plethora of information, my apologies if I missed something.

Proraso Pre-Shave green or white jar-doesn't matter-really improved the quality of my shaves for some reason. Don't know the chemistry behind it, but it worked for me. John Allan's Slick Water is good stuff, too. As always, YMMV.

No need to apologise!

If I didn't have your questions to answer i might have to go and do something productive! :O

I swore by pacific shave oil, but now get away with face lathering and letting it sit 3-5 mins before shaving. It softens my beards so much it feels like its literally melting off my whiskers. I will say it makes a noticable differnce in glide IMO.
