Practical, Brave, Cheap or Stupid?

Found myself at the dreaded "between haircuts" point this morning. My hair is nowhere near being long enough to cut but since it grows right to the base of my ear, --and I like having a clear space around my ear, from long habit-- I usually grumble and mumble at myself for a week or two before I head back to the barber.

This morning, having a bit of extra time, I thought about it for a minute, then said "what's the worst that could happen?" Then I lathered up and shaved the back of my neck and all around my ears, and even did that really annoying hair inside of my ears all with a Feather DX (verrrrrry carefully).

For once, no nicks, weepers or nada. Either I'm lucky or the Feather is so sharp, my ear will unexpectedly fall off later. :001_huh:

Anybody else want to own up to self barbering?

Regards,

- John

I haven't been to a barber in 20+ years. Started wearing my hair real short back in the 80's and have been cutting my own hair with various clippers I've bought ever since. Usually used the 0 or no guard every other day and then shaved the back of my neck, in between the on and off headshaving. Dedicated headshaver now so I guess that qualifies as home barbering.

I have been able to extend my visits to the barber by getting out the scissors and trimming up a bit. I shave the back of my neck every other day and that also helps out.

:ouch1:

I stand in awe

No need to. I was paying a barber to do something I could do myself and save a bundle of money at the same time, which I think is the "practical" aspect in the title of your thread. I can't even begin to guess how much money I saved doing it mself.

Of course someone with a bit more sophisticated haircut than mine probably can't get away with it, but the clippers you buy have instructions and some even have videos that show how to use them for various cuts. A willing spouse/partner might be fun and practical at the same time!

Haven't been to a barber in 15 years, I shave the back of my neck with a DE weekly. When my head sweats during my workout its time for a hair cut. I start with a number 6 comb for the entire head, then do the sides and back with a number 3, trim around the ears with scissors and make a final pass with a number 2 on lower neck and around ears,

total time, about 12 to 15 minutes

I have nothing against barbershops, but the last time I went I saw 2 people waiting and by the time I parked the car a mother and 6 kids walked in, I walked out and bought wahl clippers for about 30.00. I know I could make an appointment, but why should I...... I don't make appointments to pick up a video, order a pizza, go shopping, pick up a prescription, get a shoeshine, etc.

don't care if you call me cheap, I am happy with my haircut

I'm a headshaver, so if that qualifies for cutting your own hair - I do! :w00t: I shave the back of my neck each time I shave my head also, usually every other day.

I don't think it's being cheap at all. How is it any different than changing your own oil, or cutting your grass, or for that matter shaving at home instead of paying a barber for a shave? If you have the skill and tools to do the job yourself, and you're happy with the results while saving some money I don't see anything wrong at all.

I get my hair cut once every 4 weeks, so its really no problem. I do cut the hair that grows inside my ears myself though. I have a pair of electric clippers that I hit the inside of my ears with every couple of weeks or so. :biggrin1:

I have pretty long, curly hair. For 6 years I wore dreadlocks and so no barber was needed. Now I make do with ca. bimonthly self-trims with scissors and comb. (It's so long, you wouldn't be able to tell unless I really screwed up.) The back of the neck and around the ears are problem areas but I try not to worry about it too much. With long hair, you can't see around my ears. At some point I want to learn to properly trim the back of the neck. So far my efforts have been so uneven as to be not worth attempting.

When my hair started fallin out I started cutting it all off. I just look like a balding old guy which I'am.
I put my barber money towards shaving gear.
Trade one for the other
