I think you may be mixing your apples and oranges here. Like Ed mentioned would you happen to be meaning Porters?

porters yes . sorry bros, i live near the port So, my mind is there
Samuel Smith and Fullers both have great english porters. Stone has got a good smoked porter, Real Ale here in TX has a good coffee porter, 512 pecan porter is really good (only available in kegs though) and Breckenridge Vanilla Porter is pretty tasty. That's my prefered style so this list could go on forever.

any porters in California, i had some great porters but forgot to write down the names
Stone's from Escondido, Anchor out of San Francisco, Sierra Nevada, and Uncommon out of Santa Cruz are a few I can think of from out there.
+1 to this. This is a great starter porter. It is easy to drink and very flavorful. You can ramp it up to the harder stuff from there.

Anchor and Founders are two I often have on hand.
