What size scuttle LATHER BOWL do you use based on Dirty Bird sizing.

I just purchased a Dirty Bird 1.5x scuttle. I did this because my G4 is a bit small in the lather bowl for my larger brushes, which I like. Julie informs me that very few double size scuttles are ordered. So I was wondering what was the most common size of scuttle used by B&B members and if you feel that this size is good for your brush sizes. I have brushes with knot sizes of 28mm, 26mm, 24mm, 20mm.

It seems to me the 1.5 is liked so well simple because it's a bit bigger, yet not too big. Far and away, it's the most ordered. Members complained the 2x is just too big short of fat brushes, and the 1 can be too small at some rare instances. I wouldn't risk it and just go with the concensus.

I have the 1.5x and my largest brush is a Rooney 3/2. I actually am thinking of getting the 2X if I can get it in a two piece so I can use the lather bowl separately during the summer.

Even my 30mm knot shavemac looks a bit small inside my Double Dirty Bird Scuttle. Only had one brush that could really fill up that monster, and that was a Kent BLK12.

I've used the new midsize Feats of Clay scuttle for two weeks now and I'm rally pleased. It's my first scuttle so I cannot make any comparisons for other brands or sizes.

The bowl of the Norpro dip chiller has an inner diameter of 4-in at the mouth, tapering to 3-in at the base. The interior height is about 2.25-in.

I have a "ph33nyx's MIL Scuttle" that's actually a little smaller than the brush scuttle. A couple of my brushes are a little difficult to fit into it when filled with lather, but I like it that way. A good tight fit for good heat transfer.

I face lather exclusively and have no desire for lather building room in my scuttle.

I have Julie's regular size scuttle, and it works fine, but I felt I needed one a bit larger. I usually make my lather in the scuttle, so I ordered her 1.5 and its just perfect for my needs. It doesn't take up much more room that the regular scuttle, so it fits great. I can see from the size of the 1.5 that the large scuttle would just be too big. Keep in mind that's me, and YMMV. I also have the Georgetown G4 which is also very nice, but to tell the truth, the Dirty Bird 1.5 has it beat. :thumbup1: :a21: :a22:

I have the small size Feats of Clay scuttle. Too small to make lather so I've been face lathering (working well) and it keeps the brush warm throughout the shave. I'm satisfied.

My 3/1 (22mm) Rooney only has a 1-7/8" loft that when dry and splayed is 2-1/2" wide. A 3-1/4" wide bowl is sufficient for me to whip up proto-lather, using the push/swirl method--as long as it is sufficiently shallower than the loft, to keep the brush handle from banging into the bowl sides. A deeper bowl needs to be an inch or so wider so I can grasp the handle near the knot, letting my fingers take the banging into the bowl.

So... the original size is too deep for me, given its width. The 1.5X size is also at least an inch or so deeper than I need, but I could get by with it since it has the width for my fingers to fit into the bowl. Honestly, I'd rather have a shallower inner bowl, meaning more water capacity between the inner and outer bowls. None of the above work great for me, but I notice you (the OP) have much larger brushes.

[Edit] My wife loves the blue DB scuttle and demonstrated to me with a 6.25" diameter tea pot that a 1.5x will fit just fine on the sink. I am now convinced it will work great for me. So I voted for that size.
