polishing etching?

how does polishing affect etching on the blade? i want to restore the blade and give a nice mirror finish but i dont want to lose the etching.

Depends how bad the rust is and how deep the etching is. Sometimes you have to choose one or the other.

I have pretty good luck removing most of the corrosion and maintaining the etching for the most part by soaking in CLR and polishing with mother's

I don't have a "before" but you can see the damage done to the steel in this picture and imagine what it looked like. This thing was covered with "vein" rust. The polishing makes the etching a little lighter but it's either this or totally remove it. I couldn't bring myself to take off that beauty.

Good job. Its not always possible to save 100% of the etching but it looks like you've achieved a good compromise.

ok the razor i have, has similar etching as the one above. the etched area actually looks polished while the remainder of the blade is satin or matte whatever you want to call it. i dont think a picture will show much at this point. i threw it on the polishing wheel, the etching is still there but not as pronounced as the one above. i will leave it this way unless i figure out a way to bring back the satin finish while leaving the etched area polished. the blade i have is a wostenholm that has the american handshake and says americans give there right hand to..... cant remeber the rest but its all there. here is a link to the pics as i bought it.

i will try to take a pic of it after i cleaned it up. i like etching but i think i like a mirror polish more so for the mean time i wont be buying any etched blades to clean up.

Same here, it breaks my heart everytime I have to sand off over a razor etching because there is simply too much rust. I have finally decided to stay away from etchings, that way I don't have to make the same hard decisions all the time.

I have noticed however that Evapo-rust seems to do an alright job in some cases. It allows for the rust to be removed, and then you can cleanup the blade with some mag polish and get decent results. However forget about gold etchings...

I've had some success with masking etchings and gold wash.

One of the guys sent me a seven-day set that was etched and had a gold wash. Luckily there wasn't too much rust over the etching, so I applied nail polish to protect the etching, buffed the blade, then removed the nail polish using remover and the etching/gold wash was preserved.

It can help in some instances.
