Polarbears LOVE butterscotch! A Klar Seifen Klassik review

Everyone knows that Polarbears love Butterscotch!....But they hate Cinnamon. Bonus points if you know what movie that's a play off of.

So my Klar Seifen arrived from RoyalShave today and I snagged it out of the mailbox and powerwalked straight down to the shave cave to give it a rundown.

Opened to box and was only mildly disappointed to see that it was dented in 2 places. One on the side and one on the lid next to the 1840. Not a big deal, I'm not super anal about that kind of thing. Plus it's got Polar Bears on it, that's cool, right?

First impression of the scent was that a name like "Klassik" was just about the only good way to go about describing this scent. It's very complex and hard to pin down and changes from out of the tin to being lathered. It's woody and masculine like Tabac, it's floral like Lily of The Valley and Lavender, slightly smokey and clean like La Toja. When it gets lathered it takes on a very green scent similar to RazoRock Zi Peppino which is described as a green tobacco scent. I'm obviously no basenoter, but you get the idea. Very complex, but not overbearing and quite enjoyable.

The soap is very hard, so I hit it with a few drops of water while my new brush took a quick dip and prepared to give it a whirl or 50. With my brush well shaken, I went at the tin of Klar for about 20-30 seconds

After about 45 seconds of lathering on my hand, dipping the tips back into the cup of water twice, this was the result. As you can see, the lather is very thick, rich and dense and very well hydrated. After taking this photo I worked the lather for about another 20 seconds adding water one more time before the lather reached it's optimal consistency.

I tried to get pictures that would highlight the density, stability and how wet and slick the lather was, but my point and shoot camera and shotty skills didn't really turn out so well.

The lather that resulted was outstanding, and this was all from my first time using it with hard water. I have no doubt that I could get it a little better than what you see here, but not to a great degree. This soap really is good. Anyone who knows me on here, knows that I'm always ranting and raving about how slickness is the name of the game for me. I love soaps so slick that provide glide so well that you can almost drop your brush if you're not careful. Klar shines in that regard and is very, very good.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with this soap. I can see while all those who have it love it, and say that it doesn't get the attention it deserves around here. I would agree with them completely. I would have to say that after only one use, this soap has worked it's way into my rotation.

I strongly urge anyone who has not had the opportunity to try this German masterpiece to give it a shot.

Hangover

Also, had I known there was a soap with polar bears I'd have bought it for only that reason, this review helps though.

Edit: Which scent did you buy? I see Classic, Sport and Sandalwood I'm guessing the "Klassic" on the back means classic.

Anyone that can describe the sport or sandalwood?

Haha, you got it.

Yup, I got the Klassik scent.

Pretty good description of some of the other scents in here: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/306118-Klar-scents

Great soap! The Klassic I tried smelled exactly like YSL Rive Gauche edt, at least to me. I personally think Klar scents are "industrial" in the sense that they are chemical scent blends, much like Irish Spring is for example. Not that scent but that process of design and production. I have a tub of Sport and it, too, is a great soap with a somewhat similar but milder scent than the Klassic. Really a good lather!!

Very nice review. I enjoyed reading it.

The klar klassic is my hands down favorite soap. The scent, the protection, the slickness... You name it and this stuff has it. I also had an amazing lather my first time using it. It's impossible to not get a good lather, I tried. The only downside is the small tin, but that's easily remedied by transferring it to a larger container.

This soap should be getting much more attention around here.

Thanks Matt for the great review...I too ordered a tin of the Klassik this weekend and should get it tomorrow...After your review I'm even more excited to try this much talked about soap.

You're very welcome, Gents.

Used the Klar again this morning for a fantastic shave. I love the way this stuff makes my face feel.

Awesome review! Love the pics. I have not been able to get my lather to look like that. I just read some of your tips in a different thread, so I will be trying those out.

For those of you who are genuinely interested in giving this soap a shot, it is currently still on special over at RoyalShave.

Another great "proof of concept" thread. Can we all finally agree that it is not one hundred percent necessary to have tallow in a great shave soap? I first discovered this after using Provence Sante and Institut Karite. Provence is simply the full equal of the best tallow soaps. Now before we start a "vs" war let me be clear. I like tallow shave soaps. I want tallow shave soaps. I will be extremely unhappy if they cease to exist. Like all things shaving each type has its advantages and adherents. Those whose water works better with one or the other. The point is that we are finally seeing great veg soaps coming along and this can only be a good thing for expanded choices. I can even see blended versions being made too. One want primarily with the beef and a certain veg component added for whatever special "something" it brings to the lather or aftershave feel? Coming up. And the inverse. Sure it will. I think our artisans are hard at work and there are at lest some of the big boys paying attention to all this. Just look at the lather in this thread. Go check the threads about I Coloniali. Five years ago I would not have rated a veg soap other than the two Franks mentioned above as being top five worthy. It is a good time to be a wet shaver.

Cheers, Todd

I too don't care about tallow or not, performance is everything.
But a lot of people probably had bad experiences with veggie soaps, and very good experiences with tallow soaps.
That scares off. Especially when it comes to buying blind.

I got my Klar Rasierseife the other day. Today I gave it a first try. I must say it is not a bad soap and on par with other non-tallow soaps. The only things I have to criticize is the size of the puck ( a tad over 2.5") and the price. It is really hard to lather on top of the puck that is about only 2 1/2" in diameter; I ended up holding my brush by the hairs, squeezing them together so they cannot spread out much and then got to the soap. Eventually, I got some into my brush and had enough for a three pass face lather. Its a good soap, no doubt, but my MdC (my standard for an excellent non-tallow soap) gives me much more lather by just 10 seconds swirling over the puck. My second point of criticism is the price. Although I got it from the Royal Shave deal, the normal price for this mini tin with soap is $30 - wow. For this price I get two pucks of a excellent D.R. Harris tallow based soap, or can get a puck of AoS soap and have enough money left for the shipping.

I hear you on the price, Rudy.

The only reason I finally sprang for it was because it was on sale. I am very pleased with it and it's a very good soap for sure. Tallow or not, means nothing to me.

If this were to become someone's "holy grail" item or their all time favorite soap, I could see dropping 30 for it. Hopefully this will last me awhile though.

Scent aside, how different is the lather of this soap compared to Klar's Kabinett, please?

Marco,

SliceOfLife and I have traded samples of the Klar Seifen and the Klar Kabinett. When it arrives in a few days I would be happy to give it a review in the same manner as this one, pictures and all.

Thank you kindly, Matt. By the way, the Butterscotch handle on your brush looks gorgeous!
