What's new

Please tell me why I need an adjustable!

I have a Gillette Rocket HD, and a Feather Popular. Both razors give me a great shave, and especially the Rocket makes it easy to attain BBS if I want.

Now there is a Gillette adjustable for sale locally, from the 1970's. What am I missing now, and why do I need an adjustable? Please talk me in, or out, of it! :)

Ah yes, apart from the coolness factor ;)

Will it have the potential to give me better shaves than I get now?

Because you will tear your hair out with a darn near infinite combo of blades and settings

The adjustables are cool

In a few years they will likely be more expensive so get a good one while they are cheap.

The Gillette adjustable razors seem like a fairly solid unit. The slims and the fatboys anyway not sure about the super speed black beauty and other 70's units I think they started to make them out of aluminum

As always, YMMV. I have found it's helpful to have a choice of setting at times. I often use an adjustable, for when I have heavy growth. First two passes are aggressive, the third pass can be dialed down to a more mild setting. Theyre smooth shavers, I like them a lot. For what its worth, my favorite razor is my Aristocrat jr. which is similar to the HD.

Update: I decided not to buy it.

For the Gillette Rocket and the Feather Popular, I had a good reason. But I feel that this razor will be superfluous.

It does not feel good, especially at 40 euros, so the answer is "no". :)

Why do you need one?
Because it's there and you have never tried it!
Sorry, I'm a bit of an enabler.
Seriously, there are many razors I will like to try, but I'm sure I won't because I am quite happy with my set up. However, one that I resisted to no avail was an adjustable. Bought it, played with it, used it, sold it. But if I never tried it I knew I would not feel I gave a fair try to DE shaving

I especially like the Slim adjustable (vs Fatboy) because of the ability to shave around the nose - the head is just a touch "slimmer." I've been using my new Plisson open comb the past 2 weeks, and I like the closeness I get from it. The Slim I would dial at 3 for the first pass, and then 5 for the second. The OC and the Adjustables give 2 widely diffferent shaves. My OC is very aggressive, and you have to take it easy in your technique, let the razor do the work. The Adjustable is more forgiving, so when I need to get out the door quicker, the Adjustale is my tool of the day. Give that Adjustable a spin!

You definitely don't need one. Lots of members shave every day without one.

I, on the other hand, never do. I like to dial down the aggressiveness two numbers for the second and third pass. For me this makes for a more comfortable shave and no problems shaving every day.

I see that you have made over 2000 posts and I have to salute you for your self-restraint. I have a Feather Popular myself and an Edwin Jagger DE89. I purchased my Gillette Slim a few weeks ago because of the praise it receives here and the fact that I found the idea of shaving with a razor that came into the world at almost exactly the same time I did rather seductive (I'm an H-1). I also appreciate the fact that no razor built in my country today would be as well made as this - at least not without costing a small fortune. I can only see the price of these older razors going up over time.

Having said that, I really have enjoyed using the Slim but still love my other razors (especially the EJ) and know I will be revisiting them when the honeymoon is over. I think my Razor Acquisition Disorder is satisfied for now but those 40's Style Super Speeds do look tempting.

Most of my posts are in "The Nib", and unfortunately my self restraint vanishes when it comes to ink and pens lol! Which is why I don't want to spend 40 euros on a razor (now) ... I am lusting for the Akkerman iron gall ink right now :wink2:

I decided not to get the razor; I get perfect shaves now. Truth be told, I also got great shaves with the Trac II, and the Mühle R89, before I joined B&B. I sold the Mühle in the meantime, btw.

I think the answer lies in "what is your goal?"

If your goal is to use any DE with great results, then I think the Super Adjustable would be a good economical training tool. In 10 months I have progressed from setting 1 to 9 with very good shaves. Now I am beginning to use the Muhle R41 2011 version, considered one of the most aggressive DE razors.

I find it keeps the shaving interesting.

Forty euros seems steep
I bought a fatboy for 50 bucks In excellent condition no plate loss.
And a slim adjustable for 7 bucks 2 weeks later it too is In excellent condition. I would wait for the right adjustable at the right price.

Why do you need a reason?

I have a Slim, a short handle Super Adjustable, and a Fatboy. The fatboy needs replate, the SA is in VERY nice shape, and the Slim is my user razor. Its much nicer than user grade, mind you, but its the one that I like the most. Fatboy is too rough to use, but I have a feeling I will like it with its fat handle :)

Get one. I wish I had started with one, to be honest!
