They shave well. Too well. They'll ruin you for your favorite gillettes, as they all feel too mild by comparison. I still collect gillettes primarily, but since the slant I've put a lot of time into seeking out more and more aggressive razors - even mutilating a tech to expose more blade. There is no turning back.
Due to the blade angle, they sort of slice at the same time as chopping the hairs. Picture a guillotine with the angled blade! Not that bad though. Somewhere here someone had some awesome graphics that really made it clear to see.
Is using a slant the same as using a regular DE in a "down-to-side" type motion, similar to chopping, but also adding a slide motion? Perhaps with a regular DE you have to provide the technique, while the slant is intrinsic?
How the slant exactly works and whether it can be entirely replicated with another razor is a matter of some debate. I searched but couldn't find the thread where a full-blown discussion of the helical or non-helical nature of the blade is hotly debated. Somebody else might be able to link it.
A slant shaves very closely, as in, I can only use one 2-3 times a week. It couldn't be my everyday razor.
I'm pretty sure that if you do it right you're taking off stubble plus a shade of the epidermis (if you do it wrong I think you can take off a cheek.)
I love it though. I don't know how else to describe it, just a good, very close shave. I think--think--it gives a little glimpse as to why some folks switch to straights and never look back.
