B&B's depository of all things Pittsburgh.

Feel free to discuss the Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, Primanti Bros. Mancini's pepperoni rolls, Pants N'at, Myron Cope, the Gateway Clipper, Who's a jaggoff, Donny Iris, and how many time's you've almost fallen off the Jack Rabbit.

Not from Pittsburgh, but my wife lived there for about 10 years, all through HS and college (she went to CMU). Great city! PNC Park is one of the nicest parks I've ever seen, second only, perhaps, to Camden Yards. I also find myself with a terribe craving for Pamela's crepe/pancakes from time to time.

Ahrn City?

LMFAO!
That brings back memories. I am not from Pittsburgh but that is the correct pronunciation of Iron City Beer. Knew a guy in the Army that loved the stuff and pronounced it exactly that way. He also had a can collection of Iron City Beer sporting team pictures of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was his prized possession.

I lived in western PA for the first 22 years of my life and then moved to Canton 8 years ago. I never had a real Pittsburgh accent but I still catch myself saying ahrn.

I just had to google this:

I once had the good fortune to be sent to Pittsburgh on course for a few days. Nice city.

Coming from Toronto, I had no idea the accent would be different.

Day two I wandered out to get some lunch...

"Can I get the foot-long number 3, please?"

"Wadder wee?"

"Pardon me?"

"WADDer WEE?"

(He's just standing there, knife in his hand, big lazy grin on his face. What's he up to? Maybe he smoked a big fatty before coming to work. What are we? Well, you're Pittsburghers, sandwich sellers, Americans in the prime of youth. How can he be asking this question?)

"I'm sorry, but I don't think I understand your question."

"Dyou wan the wahd loaf ur the hoe wee."

"Oh. Hoe wee, please."

I was supposed to go there this weekend - Cubs vs. Pirates at PNC - but the knee surgery I had last week cancelled those plans, dammit.
My wife and I did spend a long weekend there a few years back. Two things struck me; driving through the Ft.Pitt tunnel and both of us saying "WOW!" when we exited and saw the skyline.
Also, how green the city was; trees and hills everywhere. It's a beautiful city.

I was born and raised in Pgh., moved to Ohio in 1967 at age 20 and been here ever since.

I remember putting a "Beat 'em Bucs" bumper sticker on my Dad's DeSoto in 1960.

It worked...

Anyone remember Bill Burns, Hank Stohl & Knish, Paul Shannon, Rege Cordic, Pie Traynor, Slim Bryant and his Wildcats ?

I lived in the 'burgh for several years (Shadyside, and later McKeesport area where that revitalized strip went). I miss Pamela's, and Mineo's, and that one Indian restaurant driving north towards Cranberry with over a hundred entrees from different areas of India.
Oh, I also miss the crab cakes and wasabi garlic mashed potatoes at Monterey Bay. And the weird niche restaurants. The one church they remodeled and put a giant beer brewing apparatus where the altar used to be! If anyone is going there, please stop by the Penn Macaroni Co. and get some prosciutto and olives and real Romano cheese for me . . .

Fries do not belong on salads. Or on sandwiches. I don't care if that's how Primanti's does it.

I thought the churches were made with black stone - it took me a while to figure out . . . they're still covered with coal dust.

I will never miss driving around Pittsburgh, though - there is no real east-west highway in the city?!?! And nothing going north-south in the east half of the city. The one almost highway that ends up by the stadium (dang, I'm forgetting so much . . . ) only counts for half, and the road by the Strip where you do that weird switch-back to get up to Shadyside doesn't count.

Go Cedar Point! :biggrin1:

Slaw on sandwiches.... Lol.

And fries on salads. Yinz got all dem one way streets too and bridges.

I tried to go to the strip district outside market before. You can see it but there's nowhere to park. Then if you drive by there's no where to turn around. Bridge, tunnel, one way streets... Lol...

That movie Jack Reacher got it all wrong. No way to possibly have a high speed car chase in 'DA Burg.

I do miss the Igloo. Saw some great fights there. Even a little hockey too.

Believe it or not, the Navy sent me here in 1979. I've never moved out. While I miss New England, this city fits perfectly. It's got great sports, excellent museums, fine universities and colleges (Carlow College was mine and my wife's), major musical acts come regularly, it's far greener than most people realize, and the rails to trails bike paths here are fabulous.

CDR Quan, you moved to Canton to be near the Steelers' HOF, I presume? :wink2:

Edit: I can't believe I forgot to mention O fries!
