Pipe Tips

I have a question for you all. I received some rubber pipe tips, and i have to say it ruins the flavor of the smoke. All i taste is rubber. Is there some technique to this?

I certainly don't like softie bits either, but it has nothing to do with taste. I don't like how bulky they make the end of the stem... feels uncomfortable in my mouth. I've never noticed any taste given off from them. Where did you get them from?

I have had two types of softie tips from Pipes and Cigars. The cheaper of the two taste bad to me and seem to disolve with little use. I use the more expensive type now and enjoy them.

I use black rubber bits on all my pipes. A fresh one tastes like rubber for the first few minutes, but then it goes away, never to return.

Yeah, I bought some cheap ones off ebay, they work OK but are softer than the BJ Long "live rubber bits" which are harder and seem to last a good while, but I try not bite too hard and the cheap one are less costly in the long run.

They are from Pipe and Cigar. Black tips. Its odd, and they were the more expensive ones. Perhaps ill just use them a bit more.

If you find that they don't improve, you could also try some heat-shrink tubing. Food-grade or medical-grade tubing is neutral in flavour and odour, extremely durable, and dirt-cheap - $2 will cover dozens of pipes.
